I ran into this Italian O/U at a lgs. It is labeled as a 16 gauge (and to the eye looked like one), but when I got home and studied the pictures I took, it looked like 184 was stamped on both barrels. To me that says this is bored as a 12 gauge, right?
If it is a 16, is the price of $319 reasonable?

If you mean 18.4 instead of 184, then yes it's a 12 ga.. 18.4mm equals .730".
As far as who actually manufactured the gun, it looks like a Beretta to my eyes. Beretta did a lot of contract production for private labels back in the day before there was a Beretta USA. They still might for European markets. |

Went back to try the "snap cap" test on Monday and it was sold. Never got to try it out. . . I was confused, because it was marked on the tag as 16 gauge, LOOKED like a 16 gauge, but the barrels sure appeared to be stamped 18.4 (as you can see in the pictures).
Oh well, it is a mystery that will never be known. . . by me anyway. |

If the gun was truely mis-labeled and you are still interested, then you might see it on the rack again in a while. I'd check back w/ the shop owner before giving up.
So it's not a 16. Nothing wrong w/ a light weight 12 ga O/U for upland birds. 12 ga. 7/8 to 1-1/2 ounce loads are not hard to find or to reload.
Okay, I'm being a heretic. So what!!! |

I like the 12 gauge at least as well as the 16 (especially for pheasants) with no apologies. I could never commit to one gauge.
Anyway, the fellow who sold me my sweet 6 1/4 pound straight-stocked Merkel 200E 12 gauge had it sold to him by the shop as a 16. When he received it he quickly found out it was a 12 and called the shop owners. They were flabbergasted. Now it's mine!! |

Another fine example of one man's "flabbergasted" being another man's "gasterflabbered"
I trust it's a humdinger of a gun, but frankly, I've never heard a dinger hum. Has anyone? |
