If you don't know for sure that its recently been done, Break it down for a thorough cleaning. If its not in your expertise, have a pro do it and don't forget to have the spring in the stock out and cleaned too. It might run fine for a long time without doing this, but if it fails you some cold day when you're trying to drop a rooster.........
I just like to know my semi's are clean and reliable as possible. Also, learn how and for what loads to set the friction rings. Enjoy, you've got one of the classics! And pictures please. |

Rather than disassemble the action on the Auto5's I take off the forearm and buttstock then flush out the action a few times with Breakfree or some other cleaning and lubing spray. I've done it with just the forearm off, having the gun tilted so that the spray does not run back onto the buttstock, Cleaning the springs, especially the action spring and its housing, makes a big difference too. To thoroughly clean the barrel I will use Slik 2000 Carbon Killer and a bronze brush mounted on a cleaning rod that is chucked into a drill, When the metal begins to "sing" then its stripped down to bare metal (all plastic and carbon residue are gone) and then the barrel MUST be coated with a deep penetrating oil or it will rust.
A tuneup on the old Auto 5's is simple - Just clean it and replace the springs (recoil and action) and the bronze friction piece(s). (Magnums use 2, non-Mags only 1) Its a do-it-yourself project that costs ~$35. |
