Ordered two sweet 16 spring/ring kits from MGW. Replaced everything but the action return spring that is inside the stock.
To replace do I need to take stock off? or just butt plate and get to it?

Never dissembled A-5 that far before.

Belgian Sweet 16 starting to not eject shells, hoping recoil spring or the magazine spring is the culprit.
Will shoot it in a few minutes see, if it will cycle.

The action return spring area holds a lot of dirt. You should remove the spring and follower. Clean and lube the tube,spring and follower. A new spring is always better.

Replaced recoil spring and rings, magazine spring,
cleaned receiver, barrel etc.
It cycles now. At end of season, will have smith replace the return spring, I do want to take stock off myself.

This is a very timely and helpful thread. I have a 1950 Sweet that's eaten every
2 3/4" load for the 45 years I've been shooting it. But lately, mucho extraction problems. The gun is clearly marked "2 3/4" on the barrel.

I don't know if I need to send it to Arts or just replace the action return spring.

About 40 years ago I decided that my dad's A5 needed cleaning so I proceeded to take everything on it apart, including the stock and the bolt return spring. I cleaned it all, lightly oiled and to my dad's surprise, got it all back together with no parts leftover. even more surprising, he went out and shot it and it worked well. To answer your question, there's a spring retainer pin at the base of the spring housing that you'd need to remove the stock to get to. That's probably shown in the referenced video. For years, the decision to keep or sell a gun was based on whether I could take it apart and get it back together. If I couldn't figure out how to get it apart, it got sold.

Extraction or Ejection problems???
You might try cleaning out the barrel with Slik 2000 Carbon Killer with a bronze brush on a cleaning rod chucked into a hand drill. Over the years the carbon and other crud build up in the chamber throat and while they look clean, they aren't and will affect extraction and ejection. Cleaning both the action spring and its recess (or even replacing the spring) will definitely improve the cycling but may not improve the extraction or ejection problems if the problem is with the barrel or the extractors having crud built up under them.

as much as the chamber end goes , it probably needs the extractor and spring slot cleaned and maybe recut per the thread we had here just a while back . (may not be exactly the same as a 48 , but they only need a little cushiony stuff in there to act up )

Before you remove any of the screws you would be wise to take a small ax acto knife blade and clean the screw slots. You will be surprised how much dirt is in some of these slots. Using the proper screwdriver tip is also mandatory so the slot doesn't get buggered.
