Howdy everyone,
Picked up a new to me 59 Sweet, a few months ago. JUST got time to take it to the dove field.
28" mod, plain barrel, no rib, seems in good shape and reasonably clean. Set for heavy loads.
Shooting 2.5" RST 1oz, A5's. After firing fine, ejecting fine, first 3 shells out of the mag tube, hung on the feed. Slight bolt cycle by hand, and they went on in.
Tried a couple of winchester 2-3/4" 1 oz. 1165 fps and they cycled fine??
Any clues?
Thanks |

Did you try setting the rings for light loads? |

I did not, but it ejects fine. Like 8-9 feet.
Ring adjustment will effect loading? I thought only ejecting??
It's worth a try though, thanks! |

Just a thought. The rings affect the velocity at which the barrel cycles. Perhaps it's not returning to battery at the speed it needs to.

I would first start with a good cleaning and changing the ring position for low-powered shells. Both loads you mentioned are fairly mild. This may solve everything but if not, my next move would be to call Browning's parts department and order two new recoil springs.
The larger one obviously goes over the magazine and the thin long one requires removing the stock to replace. Over time, both of those springs lose length and their their effectiveness because they stay compressed. I changed them out in my 50's era Light 12 and found the main action spring that fits over the magazine tube had compressed over two inches. I've read somewhere they should both be replaced every five years or so but that might not be necessary. This could however, explain why the gun is ejecting low power shells with a high power ring setting. These fixes are also cheap. The main spring was maybe $8.00 and the other around $3.00. Browning parts orders ship pretty fast too. You can find the parts schematics, prices, part numbers and contact info on Browning's web site.
The last poster was also correct in that the timing could be off due to the rate of barrel movement. My son's A5 Mag had issues like this that new springs fixed immediately.
Good luck. |

A tear down and cleaning is in the near future. This camping trip / dove hunt, snuck up on us, during the bustle of starting a new project and Chtistmas.
Thanks for the replies! |
