I have a couple of cheap 16 ga single barrels with full chokes, and I would like to open them up to mod. How do I do it with out spending a lot of money by paying someone else to do it? |

do I need the reemer, or will the brake hone be enough? the reason I am doing this is to have some loaner guns for friends and relatives when we shoot pasture trap. rather then let them use my pristine win 12 or A-5. |

1) Take off barrel mail it to Mike Orlen with instructions on what you need.
2 )Get it back quickly, just the way you want it and at a very reasonable price.
3 )Put barrel back on shotgun and enjoy. |

Take one sacrificial shotgun and try the hone.
PLEASE keep the hone moving and to NOT work the front of the barrel too much.
We are not talking expensive guns here.
Have fun with the hone.
Will you be using lubricant?

I opened a 16 gauge 37 from full to light modified using a wheel cyl. hone last spring. Had to dress the stones just a bit to get started. Do it dry, they fill up and get gummy with cutting oil. Finished it out with polishing compound and 0000 steel wool on a 20 ga. brass brush with one section of rod chucked in a drill. I'm no Mike Orlen but it came out pretty nice. Take it slow and measure a lot. I also patterned every couple of thousandths. Try it ,it's fun and rewarding. |

Opened the chokes on 3 16ga guns using the reamer and finishing with a brake hone. First was an old Stevens single shot which went from Full to light Mod. Next was a Stevens 311, Mod/Full to IC/Mod. After they turned out good I got brave and opened a Full choked Win. Mod. 12 from Full to light Mod.
I made many passes with the reamer removing only a couple thousands a pass so that I followed the original parallel section to help keep me in line with the bore. It must have worked because they all shot to point of aim after I was done.
The process is time consuming and if you are strapped for time I would just send it to Mike Orlen. Last I knew he was getting $30 plus shipping. |
