I have to go out to San Diego for a few months leaving at Christmas. I will drive out and take my dog with me. I wanted to go through Indiana to see my brother and stop in Kansas to hunt Public land for a couple of days. Can some locals recommend a place to go through and maybe see some prairie chickens and Pheasant. Or places to avoid Thanks

| In central/southern Il-In prairie chickens have been gone for 50 plus years--the pheasant population isn't far behind. |

I would try the area around Phillipsburg Kansas on Highway 36. There are lots of walk on lands nearby. The pheasant population there is as good as any where in Kansas, Quail are there and I have seen but never shoot Prairie Chickens. Phillipsburg and the towns around it are in better shape than many in the High Plains. Restaurants. stores ,motels, and medical facilities can be found. Plus all the small towns there decorate for Christmas, a nice touch this at time of year.
Many areas are closed to hunting for Prairie Chickens it is best to check the regulations to be sure. I've hunted areas south of Hays for Pheasant and quail had had decent luck, the area around Dodge City usually has some birds as well.
Kansas has very good maps of their walk on property and there are always lots of pay to play spots. |

This time of year, driving cross country on anything north of I-40 is pretty risky!! |

December is a great time to hunt. less people, dogs can run harder (won't overheat as easy), Birds "might" hold better, etc.
Less birds? probably - you'll earn what you shoot, that's fer sure.
Great way to play in the snow. Also, no rattlesnakes either.

Hunted walk in land across southern Kansas . Here are a couple of Roosters from the Liberal area. Saw lots of Quail and did not see any chickens. I am in Albuquerque and headed down to Arizona to look for scaled quail tomorrow. |
