Would it be safe to shoot steel in my Rem. Model 11 with a polychoke? I have a couple boxes of steel and the only modern 16 that I have is my CZ Ringneck that I don't like dragging into the marsh. I have several boxes of the Kent bismuth loads but want to use up the magnum steel 2's that I have a couple boxes on hand.

I had a question about that to the poly co . The reply was a picture of a poly and said it was good to go . And that was a 28ga poly . Mine doesn't respond to Hevi 13 as good as I thought it might , but steel may be better .

Yes, steel is OK with PolyChoke, just do not use the FULL setting

I haven't used steel shot, but I've read that a "full equivalent" pattern is achieved with steel shot fired through a barrel with a modified choke. So even with your Poly-choke set on Modified you may have pattern results equivalent to full.

The old saw I always hear is. Steel shot doesn't deform (or compress) like lead, so it patterns somewhat tighter. Therefore you can count on the pattern being one "setting" tighter than what the poly is set at. It doesn't compress so you don't use the full setting or your asking for a cracked or blown bbl. Same for screw in chokes.
I do shoot steel OCCASIONALLY in older guns including a model 11. That's been opened to i.c.

Thanks for the reply guys. I thought it would be ok as long as I don't tighten up the choke. Just wanted another opinion from guys that had been there. Smile
