I have only had direct contact with these in the 2 I own . Was running thru the safety check list when I 1st noticed the 3 position safety . Both the old Damascus and the later steel have them . Middle pos is safe , either forward or back is fire . You guys who've used these a lot , are they all like that !!?? |

Not all LCs have the 3 position safety.
http://www.lcsmith.org/faq/safety.html
When in the middle its on safe and then when pushed forward the gun is ready to fire - when the action is opened the safety will return to its on safe (middle) position. With the safety in the rearward position the gun can fire, but when the action is opened the safety will NOT return to the middle, on safe, position. This was designed for trap and live pigeon shooters. Kind of nifty. Both of the LCs I've owned have been "newer" guns (1925 and 1948) and did not have this feature. I had the automatic safety disconnected on my current gun, a Long Range Waterfowl that I use for target shooting.
Regards,
Jeff |

My Longrange model and Featherweight 12 both ave the three position safety. They are nifty and handy for having the reset while hunting and the ability to take it off for clays. Kind of a cool feature! |

my only concern is that I'm used to the safe kicking rear on the other doubles and a fire pos on these .Always just a matter of getting used to !! Now that the Tobin has moved to a new home in Missouri , I'll have more time for the get used to ! Even though I've had the safety fixed on my RedLabel , I still give it a kick forward every time I go to fire it - only gun I ever needed to learn that and can't lose it !! |

The 3-position safety has one other nifty aspect. If you are in the habit of using snap caps to uncock your Elsie the 3-position safety makes them unnecessary. With the gun broken open and the safety in the rear position, pull and hold both triggers, then gently close the gun. Ta da! Uncocked without snap caps. |

My LC had a three position safety to accompany a Miller single trigger. Push it forward to shoot the right barrel first, pull it back to shoot the left barrel first. I have never run across a three position safety gun that had two triggers. That'd be as useful as teats on a boar hog. Reno |

Interesting about the Miller single trigger. I have read that the LC's with the Hunter One Trigger (HOT) are not compatible with the 3-position safety. |
