I have a bunch of Win hull's that were marked dove and quail. I also have some Win Upland hulls which have a larger capacity and may be the newer type chedite hull. Can I load these hulls with the same recepit? Are the X-pert hulls the same as the upland hulls? The dove & quail hulls seem to get splits in the crimp area after just a few reloads. Are the newer chedite hulls that much better? |

The newer upland hulls are polyformed and not long lasting. The Cheddites are equal to the Feds. |

Winchester imported hulls in 16 ga are either Fiocchi (will say made Italy)
or Cheddite (will say made in France or Austrailia)
Both are Red ribbed hulls.
Smooth sided Winchester hulls are made in USA commpression formed.
These are the best hulls you can get but have been discontinued.
Both are hi capasity straight wall polyformed hulls with plastic base wads.
You can get reloading data in the BPI reloading manual or at Hodgen powder site. |

When I did the hull torture test this summer Cheddites actual were the first to wear out.
Even the black/green Remingtons out lasted them by 2 to 3 reloads.
Federal hulls actually were vastly superior giving 10 to 12 reloads.
The heads are thicker than any imported Hulls.
Fiocchi Blue 70mm came in secound with 9 loads with an 8 point crimp. |

I beleive that the 'Dove and Quail' hulls are compression formed, one piece hulls. They are smooth (not ribbed) red plastic. Look inside and you should see a case wall that tapers out towards the base, and no seperate base wad.
These are the old style Winchester loads that have been replaced by the Super-X load in the new style Cheddite (straight wall with separate base wad of plastic) case. The old style hulls should not be used with the same loads, as they will generate different pressure charateristics. You can find loads for them on the Hodgdon website, or I can send you some load data. They are very good hulls, and I have been reloading them for years. |
