My comments in the #7 steel shot thread about fussy crimp settings with steel loads has me thinking, aren't we about due for another Cheerio thread?

Any new revelations as to how this once overlooked part of the breakfast realm revolutionized the very act of crafting one's own ammo? Profound new recipes? Pre-breaded birds? New flavors I might have missed at the local market? Oh what ever has silenced the once mighty and vocal Cheerio contingent? The suspense is killing me, let us rise up and resurrect this fountain of wisdom I say!

I'm just about to get back into 16ga reloading. Used to be, when I needed filler, I used generic Puffed Wheat. When I was a kid, before we got TV, I think it was SGT Preston of the Yukon that was sponsored by Quaker Puffed Wheat and Puffed Rice: the cereal shot from guns.

Cheerios will leave holes in your pattern. Smile

I have used a number of fillers over the years.

My favorites are:

oat meal

pinto beans

bird seed

I like the idea of bird seed for hunting loads as I am planting food plots while hunting.

As i am still learning and defiantly unaware of many tricks of the trade... What is the purpose of this filler? Like making 7/8 loads out of 1oz or large shot space fillers?
Sorry for the newbie question. But you all are great and i perfer to ask the wise than speculate.

Yes Atepac, you are correct in your guess of why we use fillers. Or at least in my case. I add a couple pinto beans as filler when I load 7/8oz loads in with wads that are designed for 1oz of shot. They fill the hull for a good crimp and are much less expensive than the filler wads. Wink

WyoChukar, you trouble maker, Smile
You can tell your hunting season is OVER Sad

Here is the crux of the question
Proper wad/powder/shot combination, no need for a filler.

BUT we ALL have those wads accumulated that are not perfect for an application but are still needing to be used up. Hence the filler.

Folks give me wads, lots of wads, sometimes reloaders, seldom powder.

So, In skeet shooting and other clays games, I look for an effective CHEAP load. The hero is the cheerio. Higher capacity wad and less shot with the filler. In shooting over 200 rounds a week, I need CHEAP and effective Smile

Nope, not yet! Duck closes tomorrow, goose on the 28th, and Huns/chukars on the 31st. My reign of terror has a little life left in it.

However I do realize that it is over for many folks due to either season dates or unwillingness to deal with deep snow, sooooo...everyone might as well have a little fun.

For those that use only brass hulls?

Is there an application for cheerios in brass hulls or do you just set the over
shot card lower?

On RMC brass shells I have nevr felt the urge to use a filler, I just let the overshot card sit a little lower when I cover it with sodium silicate

Would it matter top or bottom of the load?

I didn't find it to make much difference but I like putting it on top of the shot before crimping and that worked real well. When i patterned it on paper at 30 yards the bean was punching a hole in the middle of the pattern!

Honestly I use to use puffed rice quite a bit but found that a 20Ga over shot card solved just about all crimping issues with the exception of ridiculously light loads( and even those if your using the DR 16). It eliminated tedious adjustments when moving from one hull manufacture to another.

Breakfast of Champions? Does this infer that it will improve my score? Surely it must, off to the cupboard!
