I relish woodcock....when prepared quickly in a hot pan...a minute or maybe two...any longer and one receives what they deserve.
No bacon or other stuff to clog the beef taste...perhaps a dash of wooster sauce and a bit of butter to cook them in.
We always cook them up at the motel as appetizers before dinner.....woodcock do not make the trip home.
Beyond that, woodcock can be the least challenging gamebird apart from a ground-sluiced ruffed grouse. A flight tired and short-flushing little bogsucker happens and one has to decide when it is best to just let 'em be.
At other times, their didoes can match their rep in literature and myth.
Confounding little fellers they are.....and wonderful. |

RE: me, retirement, and where the birds are best.
I could retire if I wanted to, or had to - but I don't want to.
Truth be told I only know a handful of successfully retired people - and that maybe an excessive quantification.
I like being somebody, I like what I do, I like having money in my pocket, I like getting up and having somewhere to go & something to, I like having people to interact with.
Besides, then 'days' in the field wouldn't be special.
Hunting birds in 'exotic' locations is something I plan to do 'someday'.
Having said all that at this point I only want to be retired during bird season, but I'm thinking about easing into that this coming year.
I've got a great wife, I've got my health - just need to trim down & tone up, and a ballsy F250 Super Duty with a truck camper. So like the USA's early space program, I plan to start slowly then ease into full blown exploration. |

That works. There is an entire nation out here to be explored. During any given year there will be places with enough wild birds of one sort or other for a traveling man to chase. Just do yourself a favor and don't plan a few days at a time. Go for weeks and truly learn the birds and their environments; it will add a dimension beyond compare. |
