I just got my first 16ga and am considering reloading for it.

I'm experimenting with RST and Polywad Spreaders, and other than being ecologically minded I am saving the hulls just in case.

What are your takes on these hulls?

Thanks in advance,

Believe RST and Polywad both use 2 1/2 in cheddite hulls and RST does a pie crimp while Polywad does a roll crimp. Does your gun have a short chamber that required you to buy 2 1/2 in ammo?

Mine is actually 2-3/4" chambers... but, it's as old as I am.

For quail and woodcock, I am focusing on 1oz. low pressure loads, because I don't think I need more lead or fps. And, I'd like to keep recoil down with a 6# weapon with a slender grip. A lot of these 60 year old guns have cracks behind the breeches.

Thanks for the response,

For those birds 1 oz should be plenty. 1200fps or even slower. 1165fps is what some of the factory game /target loads are running at. Its recoil, not pressure that's "hard" on old wood. A lot of us here shoot 7/8 or even 3/4 oz with great results. If you don't already have a press, powder, wads, etc I would concentrate on buying ammo that is 2 3/4 to build your stash of hulls to reload. But that's just my opinion of course. You could post your 2 1/2 in hulls on here for sale or trade, too.

3d's,

I am in agreement with Savage, and would offer this:

16 Gauge 7/8 oz load
2 1/2" cheddite (RST light purple) hulls
Cheddite 209 Primer
BP/Sptg 16 wad
19.9 Grains Universal Powder

Rated at 7,500 PSI, 1,150 FPS- I believe this is off of Hogdens site.
I also add the yellow polywad golf T style Spread-R.
This past season I had the most success I've ever had shooting these loads out of my French SxS over my Elhew pointers. Can't wait to start reloading them again! Also, don't hesitate to post those 2 1/2's somebody will buy them...maybe even me! Or, if you are going take them to JNW's 16 shoot in the Twin Cities on 5/20 for the sale/swap portion!
