I have always owned field trial bred Springers & Setters. Always a champion in recent parentage, often a National Champ parent. Theses dogs without exception have the hunting instinct and fire. In the field a good whistle, hand signal, bell and sometimes an e-collar and leash in jacket for skunk, porcupine type problems. None of these dogs have been totally reliable for casual domestic walk. Leash or e-collar required and then I prefer giving them a run at gun club when no shooting is going on.

Energy, be it originating from hunting keenness, youth or a lack of exercise, is a component of ownership for most of us regarding our dogs.
However, rather than looking from a point of turning something off or even on, perhaps it would be better to take the view of channeling the wonderful energy to a form acceptable at the moment.
That moment by moment end game would arrive most dependably via pack leader, discipline of understood commands and comprehending that dogs, birddogs especially, naturally build up an edge during down times.
Which, along with birddog genetics, is a good thing.
Work on channeling the oomph to a degree acceptable but you should be darn glad that you have the problem.

Lead control is something I am working on with my 10 month Gordon at present and thankfully so.
A WonderLead works wonders...other options exist.
An e-collar is available when the woods rats are around for training avoidance.
Again, oomph is a swell problem to have.

That's the truth. If anybody can find a switch on shorthairs, let me know.

George as you know I have two Shorthairs, and I did find the switch, that son-of-a-gun is welded in the on position. Cool Cool Cool

I once watched a laid back shorthair in the field. Other than that, most of them go like a bottle rocket even when it hurts.
