Does anyone know if any Sterlingworths with 26 inch barrels were made with F/M chokes? (vs I/M?) I have a 26" 16 gauge and the box is marked F/M but the catalog I was shown only had open chokes for the 26" barrel length. Wall thickness at muzzle seems thin - could the box have been mismarked?

Other borings were a no cost option for most all of the Sterlingworth's production life. This from the 1911 A.H. Fox Gun Co. catalog --

This from a 1919 A.H. Fox Gun Co. catalog --

1927 A.H. Fox Gun Co. catalog --

I have a 1928 vintage Sterlingworth Ejector Field that was ordered improved cylinder and modified instead of the normal modified and full.

Researcher sent the evidence. I have had 10 Foxes all Sterlingworths, and more in my hands that I occasionally measure. I have not seen one that was an original IC/Mod. I have seen one Brush gun choked Cylinder and Modified with a 26" barrel. All the rest were either M/F or F/F.

Graded guns could be anything, as they were generally made to order.

My 1919 16 ga Sterlingworth with 26" barrels is choked IC/Mod.

There are many vintage guns around that have been altered.

I would bet money that my 16 ga 1932 A H Fox Special had the chokes opened at some time in the past. It has 30" barrels that are choked .005" and .010". So far it's worked great on doves and my Alabama quail hunt, but it would be interesting to know how it was choked originally. I'm thinking probably Mod/Full or Full/Fuller from the factory.

A research letter from Savage will answer that.

I just received my new copy of "A. H. Fox" by Michael McIntosh, and there on page 291 is the answer on the SP chokes. 26" barrels bored Cyl/Mod, 28" and 30" barrels Mod/Full, and 32" barrels Full/Full. Other borings available at special charge, but it is most likely my Special was Mod/Full when shipped from the factory, as none of the listed options would measure .005" and .010" as do my chokes.

This one is 26" and the box is marked F/M.

Is there any risk to opening the chokes to improved?

That question can only be answered by a qualified barrel man with the barrels in hand. The "collector" in me says not to mess with a gun that still has its original box with it.
