As you can see there is something missing from this hull. sad to say the hull came apart when shooting a load. This was a new unfired hull. It was not an over power full load. The brass ejected and the tube stayed in the chamber. This was in my 1148. When the shell fired the next shell tried to get into the chamber. All it did was jamb up the gun and push the tube farther into the barrel. The action was locked solid. Finally got the shell out. Could not move the action. I did not realize at first what happened. Went inside and took the gun apart. Got everything to move. That's when I saw the tube stuck in the barrel. Got everything back together. Now when I fire a shell it will eject and load the next shell but will not cock the hammer. I can pull it back by hand and it cocks the hammer, but not when a shell is fired.
It's a pisser. A lot of work went into this gun. When I bought it it came with a cracked forearm and enough junk inside to make me believe it hadn't been cleaned in 60 years. All because of one defective hull. |

If I understand the post the gun still isn't cocking the hammer during a cycle. if so; do you still have other Rem auto's? Or maybe an 870 for that matter? Can you try swapping a trigger group from another into this gun and see if it still doesn't cock the hammer? It would possibly isolate or eliminate the trigger group from the equation.
Curious; did the base wad stay in the hull? I have the most trouble with Rio hulls due to the base wads (even on some once fired factory) moving up upon firing, sometimes as much as 3/8". If a "(least) favorite hull" poll was taken, Rio's would rank as my least. |

OH , Putz .... This is the sort of thing that was happening with the FIOS I 1st got . What ga is the case in the picture , can't see it ? The Rios I get from my trap club are 4 star Chedds and have been flawless to the pt I've been using a lot . (AA"S too , Mike !) The blue ones have been the ones avail , and I really like them . I know we've had these discussions about 3 piece cases and 16's , there really isn't a choice . They aren't always that great . The fact. shells are not always of great quality control . I still have my ultimate faith in Feds with paper bases . It's always better if shooting a double as you can check the barrels each shot ... thank god OH that you WEREN'T able to close that action as the next shot would have been catastrophic !! |

Seems to me that the bolt is not moving back far enough to set the hammer. Could be the load is to light for the recoil spring setting. How about disassembling it again and lubing everything appropriately then firing the same load. If it still does not cock the hammer try a heavier or faster load. |

If I understand this situation- the gun worked properly after you had serviced it and during the firing session until the pictured cartridge was fired. that hull came apart in the chamber with some of the cartridge going out of the bore, some staying in the chamber and some getting ejected. after that the next cartridge seeking to be chambered jammed the gun. This was followed by disassembly, removing the unfired shell and the remains of the fired shell. then the gun was reassembled but since that time it has not operated properly.
So the possible suspects are: damage was caused to the cocking/trigger mechanism; some residue remains, possibly in the sear area that prevents the hammer from properly engaging, or residue remains on the rails of the barrel and action that either add friction to the cycling process or are at the end of the cycle, causing a buffer affect that prevents the system from going completely back, thus not allowing the hammer to engage the sear.
I'm hoping that the problem is not the result of metal being bent, but is due to a small piece of plastic stuck where it shouldn't be and when removed, the problem goes away. |

I wonder where the spent primer is? I would look in the rear of the action for it |

I took the gun completely apart including even the action spring in the stock. Put evrything in a bucket I use for cleaning and sprayed everything with leaner including the action spring the breech block and the trigger group. Put it back to gether and went out and tried it. that's when I had the problem where it wouldn't recock after firing. Took the gun inside again and completely disassemble it again. Looked all the parts over and inspected all the parts. I can not see anything out of order. Everything was sprayed down with Remington gun oil and wiped off. When out and tried it again. It cocks the trigger when I work the handle and fires, and will not recock when fifed. The last time I fired it I used 1 1/4 oz Remington paper shells of which I still have a few. Those loads pound the hell out of your shoulder. If they won't do the job nothing will. I may have to spend $100.00 and buy a new trigger group and hope that fixes it. I have had a least 6 1148's and never had anything like this happen before. Also I'm done with any foreign hull. All I've got left now is Remington hulls to use now. |

OH , please don't load a 2nd shell in to you feel confident about the gun functioning well . if the hammer falls and you are lucky enough to cycle the gun , it'll most likely slam fire and don't know if the timing will have it fully in battery when it goes off . one of the guys here had that happen a few yrs ago and it blew out the action . |
