Any reason why we do not see Alliant data for Steel Powder for use in the 16 ga for say bismuth or lead data? I use it alot for my 20's and figured the softer metal type shot would benefit from it just as well as the harder stuff like Hevi and steel.

There are sources for load data for Steel powder in the 16 ga but checking their website Alliant lists Steel powder data for only the 10 & 12 gauge shells. this may be an R&D cost issue since they probably consider Steel primarily being used for waterfowl in 10 & 12 ga guns, leaving the 16 ga guns to Upland where lead is the primary shot. |

Hull : 16ga Cheddite Green ( BPI #1391670 ) 2 3/4” – Once Fired
Primer : Cheditte 209 CX2000 (Primers are marked with Black marker)
Powder: Alliant Steel 21.5 grains
Wad : PT-1680 (VP80) 4 Slits with (1) BPI 1/8” cork in cup
Shot: ITX10 #4 1 1/8 oz
Crimp 6 Fold crimps .050 deep
1186 fps 11000 psi
Hull : 16ga Federal 2 3/4” – Once Fired
Primer : CCI 209 Magnum
Powder: Alliant Steel 21.0 grains
Wad : PT-1680 (VP80) 4 Slits with (1) BPI 1/8” 20ga cork in cup
Shot: ITX10 #4 1 1/8 oz
Crimp 6 Fold .055 deep

Thank you gentlemen for the reply's. Who do you recommend sending loads to so they can be tested? I am looking to load the Federal hulls with 1 oz to 1 1/16 oz of bismuth although some of the Cheddite loads look very promising I just do not like the high pressures. Thanks again for the reply's! |

If any body has been aware alliant notified that all testing would be done by Federal.Federal has posted there loads on the net. There are no 16 gauge loads. If you want 16 gauge loads you should contact federal. No non tox loads and no 16 gauge loads. |

Big difference in your results and Ballistic Products, I'd go with Toms results more than BPI's
As a side note if you want a bit more out of the 1 1/8oz loads you may want to try a milder primer, The Remington 209P and Win 209 are worth trying to reduce pressures and get a bit more velocity using more powder in the load, if that's what you want. |

Both Alliant and Federal have had results from 16ga STEEL powder load testing for 16 years now, why they have never done anything with it is beyond me |

I sent Alliant a email requesting steel powder data for 16 guage. They said no data and no testing data in the near future. |

here's the two best datapoints I know of with Steel powder, from the VP80 wadsheet:
50204 62FF Fiocchi Fio616 Steel 27.5 VP80/pt1680 os16 7/8 382.8 Steel y 10,700 1,560 FOLD #4 VP80 wadsheet
50204 621R MultiHull Ch209 Steel 27.5 VP80/pt1680 os16 7/8 382.8 Steel y 10,500 1,550 FOLD #4 VP80 wadsheet
I've sent in for testing a 410gr load in cheddite hulls that came back juuuust overpressure at 11777psi, 1476fps. I would shoot it as is myself, but a 1/2gr powder drop would bring it into SAAMI the way I loaded it. Haven't posted the recipe as it's over saami, and I used styrofoam (meat tray) and mylar under the shot to get the lightest filler I could for this test... not sure that's what I would want for my final load, maybe felt or cork instead now that I have a good datapoint to work from.
In any case I'm confidant of an a-steel powder 16ga load 400-410gr shot, going 1450fps, will be under SAAMI pressure limits of 11500psi. I've got a load sitting on my desk right this very moment, 12 shells loaded up, to send in for testing which should be 410gr at 1500fps or so. |

If you or anyone else on here is interested, I've been trying to persuade Dr. Jon Samuelson from Reloading Specialties to make a 16 gauge steel wad. I gave him the specs to make a 16 gauge steel wad so it would hold up to one ounce of steel shot a while back, Jon told me if people showed enough interest he may be inclined to make a 16 ga RSI wad. If enough people call him and request one it may become a reality. Here's RSI's phone number
