Years back I did reload for 20 ga and 12 ga but now in my 70th year I have a desire to shoot shotgun again. Have a nice 1969 Ithaca 37 and I want to enjoy a few more walks in the woods and fields.
So, I've spent the last two weeks skimming this forum trying to glean some information and I'm more confused than I anticipated. So I decided to just ask.
I've got a MEC versamec set up for 16 ga. I'm accumulating some Federal and Estate hulls pirmarily, have some Black Remingtons and some Win SuperX. I like the Purple ones the best.(SWMBO thinks they're the prettiest)
Anyhow, I'm looking for some pet loads in 7/8 and 1oz for this fine old gun and I'm hoping one, or more of you will help this old guy out. I've got 50 lbs of lead (6, 7.5 and 9) left from my old 12/20 days still laying around and I'd like to use up some of it in the next couple of years, so help me out with some nice shooting loads.
Have Unique, Rdd Dot and 20/28 still on the shelf, and plenty of primers, just need the right other components.
I should add that I subscribe to the KISS ideal

Howdy,

Well Red Dot is really a 12 gauge powder and 20/28 says it all in its name. Depending on the Components, you will find loads using Unique, Universal, Green Dot, Herco, 800X, WSF SR7625 my Favorite:
Remington Black Game Hull
Winchester 209 Primers
Remington SP-16 Wads
23 grains of Longshot and
1 1/8 ounches of no. 9s.

For me it seems to duplicate the Equivalent of a STS or AA shell.

Bob

Welcome!

Plenty of good info about these parts. Unique works pretty well for me, not the cleanest, but not the worst I've seen either. I've been meaning to try some green dot to see if it's any cleaner.

Which wads do you have or have easy access to? I've been loading stacked card loads just because they are something different. Besides older guns I like we're designed for them anyway.

The UK 16ga loaders spreadsheets cover quite a bit of loads. If o have not checked them out yet be sure to join.

Again, welcome and good luck!

Charlie16ga; thanx that's the kind of info i was looking for...

rkittane; thanx, but I'm looking for primarily 7/8 and 1 oz loads

16'er; trying to avoid buying wads until i can settle on one or two, based on other's experiences. Have over 1200 wads now from my 12 and 20 gauge days that I'm trying to unload locally right now and i want to avoid having 5 0r 6 different ones, again trying to keep it simple.

On another vein, I see from the Hodgdon sight PB used a lot for 7/8 and 1 oz loads. Does anyone have any bad reports concerning it?

PB is great, but it's been discontinued. I've got about 3lbs left, then I plan to switch to Universal.

I use Unique almost exclusively in my 16s. The exception is some Longshot in pheasant loads.
Yes I find Unique dirtier, but that's not an issue to worry about in my view.
I do like the cabelas Herters hulls for reloading the 16 ga. In my view there currently are no great hulls being made, but the Herters hull is one of the better ones and it's purple!

I am strictly a One Day at a Time kind of guy so I like to try new stuff I have been reading about Win 572 powder which is touted as a very excellent 16ga propellant. It is now sold by Hodgdon and there are some good looking loadings on their data site. thats is the one Skeetx posted.
