Hi all.
Hope to find some info on am item I picked up today that has no real place to ask about it.
Got what I believe to be a salesman sample leg o' mutton gun case. Found it at an estate sale. They wanted $20 but today was half price so I got it for $10. The ONLY thing I could find on line was a moose brand case with a price of I believe $249. It looked like a nicer case though.
Not having any luck looking these things up since they are probably fairly uncommon. Thought maybe since so many here are into double guns there might be someone with some knowledge that might help.

This is the only mark I can find.

At first I thought it was leather but now that I've looked it over better I realize only the straps are leather. I can see a fabric pattern in the covering on the body of the case. May try to get a pic showing the texture if you all think it might help. |

OK guys, 57 views and not a single comment or opinion?
I'm WAAAAY open to opinion & speculation if actual facts are in short supply.
Just hoping to find something similar out there or someone who has one, has seen one, has an idea of vintage or value etc. |

It seems quite clear to me that this is a leg of mutton case for a very small shotgun. Being Irish, I am fairly sure it belonged to a Leprechaun.
Sorry, but that is the best I can do.
Good Hunting,

Dave,
I think it was made for a 96 gauge over/under with an eight inch barrel. They are all the rage now. Used to be everyone had to have a 3.5 inch 12 gauge, and many were waiting for the 4 inch model to come out, but now everyone wants to kill a pheasant with #22 lead dust shot out of the newest 96 gauge Citori. I like em cause you can carry a couple of hundred shells in your hunting vest.
Huh?
My guess is a salesman sample.
When I bought my Ranger 103 (Marlin 90) in 1978, the old retiree I got it from took it out of a closet shelf in a similar full sized leg of mutton case. The leather hinge broke when he folded it back, and it turned to dry-rotted leather dust shortly after I bought it. I do remember a similar number on the end cap of mine, but I don't remember what the number was.
Good display item! Conversation starter! |

My first thought was a sniper scope case. Some of the German scopes had a leather case of about that shape. I have some US sniper cases that have a similar shape but not that material.

Scale model from a diorama? Looks cute. |

Sent your pictures to a friend who knows the German and other sniper cases well, but he doesn't recognize it.
It seems that if it was a salesman sample of a gun case, the handle would be to scale not full size.
