FYI, Mike and Bill I did that so that the dolls head was clearly visible. I wanted those who weren't familiar with the gun to see exactly what was there.

Yes, and really the weak point of an Ideal. Not much more than a stamped piece of sheetmetal, but those of us who love the gun kinda view it as a small mole on a super model. Razz

I tend to view the safety more as like a difficult to undo bra clasp. A headache, don't really need it there but well worth the effort of figuring it out. Twisted Evil

You're a lousy liar. (regarding the doll's head, not the bra on a doll)

I agree with this. I have never seen another close to this condition.

Dustin's 12 ga no.6 was still packed in cosmoline when he saw it in a gunshop near Houston. IIRC, only paid 2 large for it. THAT is the find of the century: still in the grease, on this side of the pond!

Tell me that's some good number of years ago...Please! An old no. 6 still in factory grease for $2k?! That would be a find indeed! At least it wasn't a 16!

Bill, that's the only part that makes it bearable- it was/is a 12. I think he doubled his money when he sold it. A friend and mentor, who did a stint in a Cabela's gun room, said the engraving on Dustin's Ideal was the finest execution he'd ever seen.

I believe this is a pic of Dustin's:

Now I'm going to have to ask Dustin for pics.

Beautiful gun...! One question - what is the small metal piece on the underside of the buttstock ? A drop down sling swivel stud..?? Thank you!

You are close. The gun (as do most MF Ideals) has a built in, retractable sling. What you are seeing is the little piece that you pull on to uncoil the sling from within the buttstock. The same little metal piece is also what is used to attach the sling end to the fitting on the underside of the barrels.

canvasback,
Thank you for your reply, I appreciate it! After I read your answer, I remember reading of such a setup years ago. I have never seen one personally.
It would be great if the viewers could see the sling extended? Is the sling material leather or canvas?
A cool shotgun..! Thanks..
Brittman Cool

While not in the same zip code as canvasback's or the one featured in this thread as far as condition or grade, here's my 1935 Ideal 302 Clunkerette 16 ga. with extended sling. It is leather.

Gil S,

Thanks for the photo of your Ideal - very nice! I wonder how much wood they would remove to make room for their sling assy. in the stock? I can imagine a sling comes in handy while in the field?

Did you get your limit of Woodcock that day? (Nice Parker, also w/ the birds.)

Thanks again for the photo of your Ideal from 1935 - very cool shotgun! I hope to see one some day!

Brittman

Wes, thank you for the kind words. There were three of us hunting that day and 2 of us got limits. The third gun was two shy. Seven were in the bag. A younger man was hunting with Floyd and I and that is his 1903 VH 28 gauge. What a gun! It was January 28th of this year. We were really in the birds that day finding 18 in a morning hunt.

I've had the buttplate off and it appears to be a 3"x 3"x 1" ( if memory serves) square hollowed out with the reel contraption inserted into the hollowed area. Gil
