Gil, it was made known to me before they arrived that he was interested in shooting, and it would be much appreciated if I could arrange for him to be able to shoot while here. A few days into their visit (he is the fiance of our second French foreign exchange student) I showed him my 314, and the other contents of the safe. I also introduced him to Mournetas. It was soon apparent that he had an interest in firearms, but no experience. I was hoping he might be able to translate Mournetas, and maybe even help in bringing Ideals across the pond. We really need someone like Larry Brown, I think, who would know French gun terminology, to do the translation. Argo 44 on DoubleGun could do it, and I even sent him my copy. He had to decline, as he just doesn't have the time. I am convinced that he (Max, my guest) has sufficient understanding and enthusiasm to be effective in the search for the (an) Ace of Spades, and perhaps be willing to purchase and forward parts we may need from NaturaBuy.

As to how many Ace of Spades/Perfection/Ideal d'Art were made- no clue.

Here is Max in my library with one of my favorite guns to shoot:

Mike, beautiful M-1. I don't think Springfield, Winchester, Int'l Harvester or other contractor made that stock for Uncle Sam. Wink Gil

Nope. I take credit for that. Glass bedded too. Routinely puts the round on steel at 300 yds, the longest shooting distance I have access to. Springfield Armory, 1944

Sounds like you're having a happy visit, Mike! And thank, James for the pic of the elusive Ace of Spades!

I was recently reading Gough Thomas on the form and function of boxlocks and other non-sidelock doubles. He laments the prevalence of squared, boxy receivers, arguing that a rounded body is stronger as well as more pleasing aesthetically. He suggests the classic Dixon round action would be the perfect gun--except that most have plain, straight action backs, whose severity of line, in GT's view, clashes with the harmonious, rounded, fluidity, what Terry Wieland called the "serpentine grace" of the Dickson.

In light of all that, it strikes me the the Ace of Spades pretty much answers all of GT's criteria. It's a true round action, with the receiver back relieved not by a mere bit of scalloping but by a mini-sculpture that's perfectly integrated into the whole.

So the perfect gun? Well if it had a top-tang safety with intercepting sears......

Anyway, Mike I hope your quest is successful and you find a stellar example de ce fusil magnifique!

Max even taught me how to pronounce "fusil" correctly. Razz
