Hey gentlemen. I don't post much at all, since the level of wisdom on here well exceeds mine when it come to this greatest of all gauges. But I thought you all might enjoy this. A couple of weeks ago I had the pleasure of taking a turkey with one of my 16's for the first time. My friend and I are now going this weekend on a hunt for 4 days and are both carrying 16's. Man, I love these guns.

Classic gun with a classy bird. We usually get a spring gobbler thread running about this time. Work has reared its ugly head with me, but I should have had one by now. Haven't heard a peep from Reno (Twice Barrel?) who is usually in the thick of things by now. Hope he is okay as I haven't seen a post by him in months. Gil |

I was using Remington nitro mags in #4. The gun loves those, throws a better pattern with them than my 12 gauge with a turkey choke. |

Couldn't have happened to a nicer gun and the man who toted it. Special when it's a 16 and even more so that it's a model 12 with a nice patina. Reno |

I took this Rio a couple of years ago in Washington state. The shotgun is one of two Model 12 16 gauge guns I own. This one is an unaltered nickel steel gun made in 1917, will full choke and short chamber. I used a #6 load, but I can't recall the manufacturer right now. No problems with the load, though. This year I'm using the same gun but with RST #5 shell. I'm looking forward to hunting with this gun on it's 100th birthday.

My model twelve seems to have a model 97 forearm that gives it a unique look. I've killed one gobbler with it and plan to use it this spring. Reno |

When was it made? That looks like an older one I once had. I think Townsend Whelan and the RIFLEMAN tech staff popularized the larger wood. My second to last year of manufacture M97 also has the larger wood. (I'm sorry, none of my M12s or M97s are in 16!) |

I don't know when the gun was made, but it was patched together from parts by a friend who owns a bunch of 12s and 97s. I'm testing him to see if he's listening!

Reno , your gun is a late model M12 with the zig zag fore arm iron . When we talked about it , you said you liked the older ones , and I had an extra ring tail FE . Just cut the notch out to make it fit . It's a std FE from an older gun , just notched . I believe that gun was # over a million , so it's as good as it gets for strength , chambering etc . I've shot some super mags out of mine , and other than the recoil , was fine . Back in the fox hunting days , shot lots of 11/4 loads out of that gun - 30'' full . Kinda wish I still had it , just couldn't get beyond the recoil factor even with target loads . ( American Select / Activ load in our data was designed for that gun - still a LARGE ouch factor ) Been playing with my ole Win 37 20ga's lately - still want a great Hevi load such as the guys have posted here for the 16's . Probably will get the Blue Dot Hevi load tested just for peace of mind . Can get a feel for the target loads , just approach the big guys warily !! |

Took my 1st turkey of the year last Wednesday using the new Browning A5 with the full choke (throwing patterns more like extra full choke) using some older Winchester double magnum shells I had. I had patterned to 35 yards, but had to push it to a 45 yard shot due to environmental elements potentially spooking my bird.
He had 1 inch spurs and a 10 inch beard. |
