I ran across a Stevens 5000 in a 20 ga. BUT I have a question. On the side on the receiver is stamped the word "second". What does this mean? I can find no refferance to this marking.
Hopefully one of you that are much more knowledgeable than I can tell me.
Thanks

Could be part of a two gun set, although most I've seen are marked "1" and "2". |

Most likely it was a factory "SECOND" that was sold to an employee. Probably had some cosmetic defect that kept it from passing an inspection, but was still perfectly safe to shoot. |

That sounds like the most logical answer. It has a non checkered stock and a checkered forearm. So you are more thsn probably correct. It does lock-up tight and shoots fine.
Thanks for your expertise...
