I'll try that load this fall when rabbit season open but I'll replace the #8s with #5s or #6s were do you get your spreaders from |

That's what I was told by the gunsmith when I took it to him to have it re blued. He asked me if I shot factory 2 3/4 loads and I said ye he said that the chambers run short on some of the m12s so he checked it with what looked like a head space gauge and said it was 2 9/16 and said if I wanted to find shell that are closer to my gun specs I needed to talk to y'all he's the one who led me to this site he said if he needs any 16ga info this is were he looks and so far he's right y'all have been nothing but helpful |

Thank you very much 16'er I'll get it all ordered and loaded and try to shoot some hand thrown charcoal briquettes to try out the spreader loads that's how I normally test out my close in loads with my other gauges I'll let you know how they work 16'er and I'll try to video it thank you and god bless |

(EARL CONFEDERATE) The reason I asked is because I have seen a mistake made in measuring Model 12 and Model 97 barrels many times. About 1/4 inch of the chamber on these guns is contained in the receiver. If you measure the chamber with the barrel removed on a 2 3/4 inch model they just measure about 2 1/2 inch. You have to add the chamber length contained in the receiver to the length in the barrel.
These length are just approximate. Actual lengths have to be measured. I have found every 16ga Model 12 and 97 chamber I measure to be undersized with very short forcing cones. Opening up the chamber length with a longer forcing cone seems to greatly reduce felt recoil. It makes shooting them more enjoyable.

I'll consider lengthening the forcing cone the gunsmith wants $250 for this is that a reasonable price |

The cost to lengthen a forcing cone and make the chamber full size usually cost $60.00 to $90.00 for a single barrel. It just requires one cutting tool and takes 15 to 30 minutes.

What else is he doing?
Mike Orlean will do the Chamber and forcing cone and polish it for around $60.00 of course you would have to ship the barrel.
If it where me and it spit out any 2 3/4" shell you put in it , I would leave it alone and shoot it. |

I might still lengthen the forcing cone that makes a more uniform shot pattern thats what i heard and lessons recoil doesn't it for $90 bucks that's not bad I also thought about getting it cut for Browning in vector choke tubes any body know how much this cost and who can do it |

Winchester and the rest of the 16ga world went to 23/4 about 1927 ish . So from 1927 till 1964 , everyone made the longer chambered guns , but there were no recalls to update old guns . Many billions of longer shells have been fired without incident , like the others have said , if your gun ejects , good to go . If your gun will eject Herters , say , then the window at least has been elongated . |

Sounds good to me, Earl, why don't you look up your serial number on the gun and see when it was made?
There are a lot more 2 3/4 inch M12's out there than 2 9/16. Just a thought.
Then if you don't have any reference, let us know here, and we will look it up for you.
