I really like the Herters Dove and Quail 16 gauge #8 shells. They burn ultra clean in
my Browning Citori Gran Lightning, Winchester 12, Browning Sweet 16, and Fox SW.
I shoot a lot of 5 stand and sporting clays and appreciate the low recoil. I would like
to reload the hulls with the same components or find a reload recipe with the same qualities. When I dissected a loaded round it contained 16.3 gr. of a green disc shaped
powder, one ounce of shot, and a Cheddite? wad. Any suggestions or comments?
Thanks

I just wish that they would put #8 shot on sale like the 6's and 7 1/2. |

This load would be really close , same wad . Use high quality magnum lead and it will be better .
also everything the same and 17 grains of green dot will be real close also . |

Thank you all for the warm welcome and the prompt replies. This gives me some great
options to replicate the Herters load. Since I already have Universal and Green Dot
powders, I may try those suggested loads first. As soon as the SG16 wads arrive from
BP, I will try the suggested Universal and Green Dot options and let you know how they compare to factory. You guys are the best.
My gratitude
Joe |

I loaded and shot 4 boxes of this same load so far. I personally found it to feel a tad stiffer than the factory loads, but:
1) that is 100% opinion - nothing I sent in to be tested or measured.
2) I shot 3 of the 4 boxes out of pretty light guns (new A5 and Citori Feather)
3) These were the first four boxes of shells I've ever reloaded in my life, while I think I did a pretty careful job with them, I certainly don't have the precision or experience majority of this board has.
I'm going to try backing off to 20g even next go round. |

I use this one quite a bit, more so a 7/8 oz load with International Clays and the DR-16 wad.
Both pattern tighter than the Herters load in my chokes. Usually have to go one choke tighter with the Herters for close to the same pattern.
I can't get out to the shop to check on the International clays load right now. Just about to flood away. Looks like theres water running into the shop and I've never seen that before. |

Hope all is well with the water. We are still recovering here in LA from the floods last August.
Regards,

other than webbed toes we're all right. I don't have a gauge out, but have heard rumors of 6-8" of rain. I'm on fairly high ground here and out in the country, but the wet weather creek coming out of the hills to the west goes through a 5 foot culvert under my driveway and was backed up enough by the constriction of the culvert that it ended up about 6" over my road. The road wasn't damaged but it did wash away some of the embankment on the downstream side. Folks further south and east probably got the worst of it. |
