Hodgdon's use of the word "Clays" comes from their introduction of the "Clays Series" of powders to go head-to-head with Hercules/Alliant's Red Dot, Green Dot and Unique, which nicely covered all loads in the target gauges except the .410. The market target was the shooters of inanimate targets -- clay targets -- so they felt like they should use the word "Clays" in the names of all three powders of the series. I guess their thinking was Clays was for ordinary 12 gauge trap loads, Clays International was for "fast" stuff for international trap, and Clays Universal was for 20's and 28's and lots of different usage in the 12, and it reminded people of Hercules/Alliant Unique. To get around the confusion and the long names, the powders became known to those who used them as Clays, International and Universal. Anyway, Grouser47, you are among a large crowd of folks slightly confused by Hodgdon's naming of this series of 3 powders.

In marketing-speak, I think Hodgdon tried to use "Clays" as a "brand", just as they have with other lines they have accumulated and marketed, such as the IMR's, the DuPont names (PB, 800-X, 700-X, etc), the SR's, the H-powders, etc.
