Gentlemen,

Taking the time to read Hemingway's Lost Guns, an article by Silvio Calabi, Steve Helsley and Roger Sanger that appears in the Shooting Sportsman Magazine this month I came to appreciate just how much Hemingway's misunderstanding of Communism effected his own life, and his fortune.

His fleeing from his Finca Viga home in Cuba in 1959, as the Communist took power caused the loss of not only his home, but most of his possessions acquired over the 21 years he lived there with his wife and children. Ofcourse fleeing the Communists he had to leave some of his fine double guns behind.

The pictures of PaPa's .410 L.C. Smith double gun, his Winchester 20 Gauge M21 and his German Adamy (Brothers) 12 Gauge O/U rusted and abused are a living testament to what Communism really is. His 16 Gauge Elsie's have never been found, in Cuba or the US, they are not mentioned in the Article.

A very very good article on Hemingway's Lost Guns, well worth reading.

Hemingways .410 L.C. Smith appears lower right, the German Suhl Adamy upper left. Both fine guns rusted and abused under the Communist regime that took power, and Hemingway's home in 1959. He was lucky to get out alive as he returned to his home in the USA.

Dave, nothing to do with Hemingway's lost guns, but seeing as how I so much admired the man, I would recommend anyone who wants to read a non-fiction Hemingway book to read "The Green Hills Of Africa".

I purchased this book when I was a teenager, I still have it, and every few years I pull it out and read it again.

Any hunter will enjoy the book. Wink

Dale,

I agree 100%, Hemingway is one of my favorite writers and the Green Hill of Africa is one great read. The Snows of Kilimanjaro is another one of his great reads, that I like very much. The Sun also Rises about the bull fighters is serious stuff also.

gunnut,
Great luck finding a pair of Zeiss binoculars like Hemingway's, have fun with them!

I agree 100%. It is inconceivable to me that anyone could let such fine firearms be so badly neglected and ruined. Tells you all you need to know about Communism and bureaucrats of any flavor.

Vern,

The Lost Hemingway Guns article is in the July - August issue of SSM, starts on page 60 with a picture of Hemingway and his young "house quest" holding shotguns as they stood together.

The more you read about Hemingway the more you understand that he never recovered from the loss of his Cuba home villa, and the loss of his best friend.

Even with the great talent God blessed him with it seems he could never recover from the Communists taking his home and shortly after, the loss of his best friend in a hunting accident, where he had broken his promise to go on the hunt, to stay back and finish writing his novel "For whom the Bells toll"

He eventually would take his own life just before breakfasting morning.

My wife and I just returned from a short trip to Cuba a few days ago. We were able to tour Hemingway's estate in Havana and view the inside of his house there. It has been very well preserved and maintained. All his books and trophy heads are still there and in good shape. Seems a shame that Hemingway once embraced Fidel and his revolution and then was blindsided by the same man after the revolution was successful.

If you have a hankering to go back to 1959, you should visit Cuba now, before it becomes more commercialized. Some fantastic old cars there. But be prepared to experience poverty, one of the many ill effects of communism.

Like gomerdog, I was fortunate to visit the Hemingway estate about three years ago. Beautiful site on a hill. After Hemingway left Cuba, they brought his fishing (and submarine hunting) boat, the Pilar, up the hill and have it on display on the estate. Plenty of history in that place. Hemingway has always been my favorite authors, so had to see it, and glad I did.

gomerdog,

I would love to see Hemingway's home in Cuba the Finca Vigia must be incredible especially to a guy like me, as he was my favorite of all writers and sportsman. Unfortunately as a retired US Army CID Agent I go no place where I can not carry at least a side arm, if I can absolutely help it.

Do you have any pictures you can post of the inside of Hemingway's home, if so please post them for us to view! Would live to see them.

No doubt Hemingway learned his lesson about Socialism/Communism the hard way, and often talked about the dangers of it toward the end of his life.

Legend has it Hemingway sent his young house guest and her mother out of Cuba, because he had a good idea that Castro was about to take peoples property and in- prison, or kill many of the wealthy/middle class residence, especially American's and that included him. In fact the story goes that he was warned the event was coming by some of his close friends, who worked for the Havana Police Department.

Looking on the pictures of some of his fine old guns ravaged and rusted in the article, and realizing what the loss of Hemingway's home did to him, makes an American Sportsman hate Castro even more.

Pine Creek/Dave

Can you imagine what Hemingway's 20 Gauge Win M21 would be worth today, to a Museum here in the USA, especially if the gun was in good shape. Even like it is rusted and abused in the picture, a Museum would pay millions to acquire it.

Hemingway was a walking treasure re witnessing Life firsthand and writing of it....otherwise, he appeared a man of constant sorrow.

Perhaps, the killing of sea turtles with hand grenades and other such shenighans came from issues that arose from unbearable burdens...that he bore them so long is testament to what man can do or, can absorb.

I would guess that his inability to write in his last years and the electroshock treatments are what drove him to suicide...somewhat of a family condition.

Regardless, it is a shame that his talent could not have gone on even further than it did.
He lived a Life as no other ever will...and, that alone is legacy enough.

Thank you very much for your quick reply to my question. I am also a large fan of Hemingway and have, and have read all his books. Again, I thank you

Pine Creek/Dave - I'll try and post some photos in the next couple of days. It takes me a while to figure out how to post pictures, as I don't do it very often. Stay tuned.

Flyline,

You will need to use an internet Photo host, and bring your pictures across from it, unfortunately we can not post pictures here on the 16, directly from our home computers.

Pine Creek/Dave

They do come out nicely however.
