At the range, any proper sized dowel will do. In the field a collapsible cleaning rod is a good thing to have, and much more versatile than this item. My field rod is the civilian version of the AR military rod with an extra element to make it long enough. Why spend money when you probably have a suitable rod in your gun maintenance kit? |

I could see it being useful to carry at say a sporting clays course. Looks like it would deploy/breakdown fast aka a collapsible tent pole |

James Bond uses one. I think Jim West of the Wild Wild West had one in his shoe. |

A guy at the range has a piece of brass that's smaller than 20 ga in diameter and about three inches long. I think its a piece of an old brass drift. He carries it in one of the shell holder loops in his vest. If a wad sticks, he just opens the gun and flicks it down the barrel. Out comes the wad and metal. Much easier than carrying some folding rod. He can use it on automatics as well. He slips it down the muzzle. There is no damage to the bolt face as the wad cushions and protects it. Wish I had one. It is not a commercial object, just a piece of metal he picked up somewhere. |

Rifle cartridge case filled with lead...I use a .35 Whelen case....naturally depends upon a proper match to bore.
Never had it fail to dislodge but....it certainly could.
Insert a tapered rod in the case mouth and one has a nice pipe tamper as well. |

I had a wad stick in a .410 last year while dove hunting.
A quickly cut branch from a salt cedar (Tamarisk) worked beautifully |

Wad removers are definitely a good idea. Not all sporting clay stations have one available. With one like JNW's you're even prepared for Dr. Loveless, range or field.

I carry this small multi-piece military rod in my vest.

Dave,
Great Picture of Dr Megaleto Loveless, pointing his 6 gun. Robert Conrad would be pleased!
Conrads Wild Wild West, one of my favorites.

I did the same thing. Use a '06 cartridge filled it with lead and capped it off with bullet backwards. Flat base out. Works great. |
