A 42" barrel would not be a good choice for wingshooting in my opinion. If I'm not mistaken, the barrel appears to be equipped with a shallow V rear sight. I'm betting the gun is designed for slug shooting of for taking stationary small game or birds at longer ranges.
That would not make it a poacher's gun, but one meant for use by the landed Japanese gentry. It's not a gun the average working class city or country dweller would want to or even be able to own. Pre and early post war Japanese society was very stratified (still is to some degree). Legally owning a shot gun (or any gun) was just not possible for the lower classes. Penalties were also very severe--like beheading. Just how it was in old Japan. |

(Coondawg) A 2 1/2" gun will chamber a 2 3/4" shell. Have you measured the chamber?

That would probably be the wisest thing to do. RST all the way. I finally ran across a armslist for one of these Japanese Greener type's that was advertised as a Greener type Japanese Trap gun. It had a rib barrel I think that was around 36". I like mine because it's 16ga and a odd ball. |

The one on armslist was a 28gauge. I'm going to practice on some skeet then come Labor Day weekend I'm going to try to wack a dove or two. |

Why a big timber squawk killer?
Never saw one with a barrel longer than 36" but those old Long Toms were standard barn guns.
Certainly is unique in several measures. |

I see an open rear site . What is on the muzzle ? Just a thought perhaps this is for shooting solid projectiles and the long barrels are used to add accuracy. |

It has a slightly raised brass bead front sight. |

Coondawg, that gun is a keeper. As Mike says, use RST's in it, and you have no worries.
The last pheasant i took was with a JP Sauer 16ga w/ 29 1/2 inch barrels choked IC & Mod. Used RST 2 1/2" shells with # 6 shot. He went down, dead when hitting the ground. They are damn fine shells.
I love single shot guns, both in shotguns and rifles. I bet you are going to have a lot of fun with that gun!
Keep us posted.

Looks like a nice piece, thanks for sharing, have you measured the choke? if anything close to IM or full I see a turkey or card shoot gun. Weight? Probably little to no recoil with the long barrel. Best of luck with it. |
