Early 1900's Connecticut gun company. Owned by Sears Roebuck in later years. They turned out a few nice graded guns but mostly lower grade field guns. I had one in 12 gauge, a solid side lock double, my son has it now. |

The stock appears to have a lot of drop in it, enough so that I would certainly pass on it. The 2 1/2" chambers means you would have to reload or buy special shells for it. Owning a 16 ga means finding shells can be a challenge at times unless you plan ahead, having a 2 1/2" chamber just makes it more difficult. |

I have a Meriden 16 gauge SxS with 30" barrels. It's well made, but quite heavy for 16 gauge at 7lbs 12oz. I also have one in 12 gauge, both guns seem to be built on the same size frame.
The company stopped making guns around 1918. You can learn more about Meriden Firearms here: http://meridenfirearms.com/history.html |

It appears to be a nicer version of the Crescent Arms gun. I could be wrong but they may have come from the same factory. I looked at this gun with the possibility of restocking and lengthening chambers. The barrels taper real fast at the chamber end though so I was a tad bit uncertain about lengthening and didn't want to load 2 1/2" shells. Ended up passing for something I really, really like. |

Crescent Fire Arms Co. made shotguns under many different names but, as far as I can tell, they didn't make any of the Meriden branded guns. Meriden Fire Arms Co. made guns under their own name and the A J Aubrey brand. They were owned by Sears, Roebuck & Company and sold primarily (maybe exclusively) by Sears.
Crescent was located in Norwich, Connecticut and Meriden's factory was in Meriden, Connecticut. In addition to the link I mentioned in an earlier post on this thread, there is a good article on Meriden Firearms Company and its founder in Volume 21, Issue 1 (Spring 2010) of the Double Gun Journal. |

Yep, 2 1/2" ammo is almost impossible to find, and it's pretty common for 16ga vintage guns to have antiquated double triggers and long clunky barrels. Please folks, heed the warnings and just pass them by. |

I went online and looked at several Aubrey/ Meriden guns last night. Some are actually pretty decent looking guns. The external similarity with Crescent is obvious. Crescent probably used some of their patents to make cheap copies. I always liked the look of the Crescent side plates, but was never impressed with the workmanship.
These guns seem to be much more carefully finished. There are some bargains too, but I didn't see many that were not damascus barrel guns. One appeared to have fluid steel barrels but the rib was marked as damascus. Custom job perhaps. |
