I recently bought a lot of Winchester AA style 16’s and while sorting them I found 13 of them that said Steel shot on the side. Factory they had 7/8 ounces of #2 Shot. I didn’t believe it at first but after I shined the flashlight on the base wad it was sure enough a Compression formed hull.
Does anybody else have any of these? I am looking for information such as velocity, year, etc. It would be nice if they could be loaded with steel again but if nothing else I enjoy the historical and nostalgic side of things.

Matt, I killed a goose with one of those steel shot hulls I put in the box. Recoil was so light I had to slam the butt pad with my hand to reset the trigger on my Browning for the second shot. Not one of Winchesters best loads. John

Matt,

As an old duck hunter, I am very familiar with Win CF steel loads. I bought several flats of them during the 90s and shot a lot of ducks with them in flooded timber, where ranges are generally under 30 yards. Like all other 16 gauge factory steel loads, they are fairly anemic with velocities around 1200 or so, as best I can tell.

Winchester was the first to put 16 gauge steel on the market, and the first to bail out of the market. They were only available for about 5 years or so. I've still got almost a flat of them.

I use my steel CF hulls for specific loads for hunting. Right now, I use Dove and Quail 8-star CF hulls for my pheasant loads of #5s, my older high brass CF 6-star crimps for high veloicty #7.5s (to use in areas with both pheasants and quail), and my CF steel hulls for lower velocity #8 quail loads. That pretty much covers the bases for this hunter, as I no longer hunt ducks. I do load steel #7s for quail on federal land, but I use straight wall hulls for them.
