I was there for the pheasant opener, north of Dodge City.. hunting on our family farm was poor, but a bit better than last year.
I used my 16 ga Citori heritage.
Going back after thanksgiving to try again.

Just got back from hunting in Norton 11/14 - 11/16.
Bird numbers appeared down, but there were lots of cacklers in standing corn (later than usual harvest) and cover too thick to walk through. We did get a few out of the CRP, but nowhere near prior years.
Quail numbers were way up and we saw at least 7 coveys in areas that looked like they should hold birds (small trees, plum thickets). I actually hit a few!
I was using a fairly well preserved Remington 48 Sportsman 16 with a PolyChoke. It was my first time with an autoloader and the 3rd shot was comforting, but ultimately futile on my last rooster with a 40 mph tail wind. As my friend said, no one ever misses a pheasant by shooting too far in front.
I will be going to north central area. Cameras will be with me. I have a lot of fall pics, but haven't taken the time to process and organize them. It has been a grand adventure again the past few months. I really need to share a pic or two.

I missed the opener for the first time in many moons but will be in north central KS Thanksgiving weekend and the week following. Truth to tell, it's been more like fishing weather than bird hunting weather, so hoping for a bit of a cool down. My favorite Fox 16 is out of commission for a time so hoping the Sterlingworth and the Trojan will do the trick.
