I shot and owned an A5 for awhile. If it fit me a bit better I would probably still be shooting it. My son has it now.....anyway.

All loads 1 1/8 oz. @ 1200 FPS and faster/heavier worked fine with the ring set for the heavy setting...bevel against the brass friction ring, and a couple drops of light oil.

For 1 oz. loads it liked the ring on the light setting and a couple drops of oil.

For 7/8 oz. loads it liked the light setting and a bit more oil.

I really never had a problem with this system even though some believe it to be a p.i.t.a. to switch the ring.

I also had some stout 1 oz. loads that would cycle the gun just fine on the heavy setting.

I believe the owners manual gives you a pretty good idea on what to expect.

As far as whether these guns were optimized for a certain load? I saw the same post....you can’t believe everything you read on the internet.

To be correct, you CAN believe everything you read on the internet, but then you'd also be WRONG in several of those beliefs. Did I tell you about the ocean view property that I have in Kentucky that I'd sell to you because I like you so much, and for a quite reasonable price?

Run very well by Art and family. Check out their website. Huge stock of preowned Browning stuff--many a5 to look at, from old to newer. He has stock of typically necessary parts.
I sent my gun, he cleaned and checked it out the same day it got there and returned it. I was very pleased.
They welcome phone calls for questions---very knowledgeable
I am a fan of Art's A google search will get you started.

Art is the Man, on A5 service, well known here.
I also have an A5, that jambs with RST 2.5", A5's. A slight pull back on the operator handle and release, and it Chambers right up. Catches every 2nd shell. 2-3/4" chamber, 1959 Sweet.
Seems like a timing / Friction Ring issue to me. No issue with 2-3/4 hulls.
I like RST Shells and use them in several of my guns. Not a shell issue, a timing issue.

I took the time to clean my a5 and set it up for heavy loads. Put on a couple drops of oil
Now I am ready to go out and try shooting 2 1/2 ammo again.
