Caveat, that the gun is in good condition and the chambers are 2 3/4"

The Hunter Special introduced in 1937 and it had a rotary bolt locking mechanism that was identical to the one used in L.C. Smith shotguns. The Hunter Special retailed for $30 in 1937 when the Fulton was $25, the Fulton Special was $31, and the L.C. Smith Field Grade was $43. In 1938 a .410 was added to the Fulton line and production of the Fulton Special was discontinued. The Fulton and Hunter Special were discontinued in 1945.

There were only 1900 16 ga Hunter Specials made you know.
I have a 20 in near mint original condition of which only 1290 were made.

Wheat,

Did you buy the gun?

If you haven't bought the gun yet and are wanting a lighter weight 16, ask the seller if he'll weigh it for you. The Hunter Specials tend to run on the heavier side for a 16. Mine weighs right at 7lbs with 28" barrels. That said, I really like mine inspite of it being a bit heavy for gauge. I had the chokes opened to SK1/SK2 and use it a fair amount for grouse.

My Hunter Special 16 ga. weighs 7 lbs. also with 28" barrels. I like it heavier because light guns and I don't get along.

Mark,

I tend to agree with you. I have a tough time with anything below about 6.5 lb. Along with my Hunter Special at 7lb, my 16s run- (2x) L.C. Smith Field grades at 6.75lb, Model 12 at 6lb 10oz, Ithaca 37 at 6.25. I shoot fairly well with all but the Ithaca.

I have one "lighter" weight gun in my modest gun accumulation that is an exception for me- a skeet choked Rem 11-48 28ga at 6lb 2oz. It's hard for me to miss with that gun and I'm a fair shot at best.

In spite of the current obsession with light weight, most of us will shoot better with a gun that's a bit heavier. Not a thing wrong with a 7lb. 16ga; IMHO, a 16ga sxs that's 6-1/2 to 7 lbs. is just right.

I am with you on that. I may shoot a few rounds of sporting clays after I get it. RB
