With the crummy weather I've been holed up in my basement reloading . I have been roll crimping some 2 1/2 inch 16s I am amazed how easy and fast the process is. I am loading with a mec 9000 and removing the hull at the pre-crimp to take to the drill press and crimp with a lyman roll crimper I do batches of 50 at a time and take a break.
I am looking for some 7/8 or even 1 oz 2 1/2 inch load recipes
i have a lot of dr16, sp 16,r16 and cheddite hulls
These are my current recipes
Remington black hull cut to 2.5
win 209
17 grain unique
sg16
7/8 shot
20 gauge overshot card
listed at
9100 psi
1180fps
Herters Cheddite cut to 2.5
Cheddite primer
17.5 grain unique I add .5 grain over listed recipe
sg16
7/8 shot
listed with 17 grains unique at 7100 psi
1120 feet fps |

Hard to understand the pressure difference between those two loads. |

the pressure increase is probably due to the stiffer hull |

pressure difference is definitely the difference in the hulls . |

Remington produces more pressure . There's is Remington hulls and then there is all the rest ( straight walled hulls ) oh ya and the Old Winchester Cf which produce more pressure also. |

The Remington hull produces more because of it's smaller internal diameter.
It may not seem like a lot but it doesn't take much. |

But what about the wads? Does the sg16 or sg16s typically produce higher pressures given everything else being equal? |

Nothing that is consistent.
You seem to be concerned about chamber pressure, why? |

Because my gun was made in the 1880s. It is proofed at 900 BAR, but I don't really want to get anywhere close to that.
I see no difference in wad height resulting from the two wads. The sg16 nestles down into the powder so that its fingers in the base seem to be in contact with the base wad. |

I can only tell you what the practical differences are between the two wads......one will sit higher in the hull than the other.
Neither the SG16 or the SG16s will demonstrate a significantly higher chamber pressure than the other. |
