Its not obvious, that's for sure.

its in the base wad. One has a bunch of little fingers making it take up space.
the other has ridges on the inside edge adding more volume

the SG16s have little fingers. Would that increase or decrease pressure, all else being equal? What other effect would it have?

Not sure but I think it only effects the volume
the fingers take up more space
call bpi and ask
I interchange them according to shot size, larger shot take up more volume for a given weight

But those fingers are in the base of the wad. That wouldn't affect lead volume -just powder space. I'm not following you.

With the crush sections essentially the same....

The SG16S has less fingers in the powder cup so the wad settles lower in the powder allowing more headroom for lead All Else Being Equal.

The SG16 has more fingers in the powder cup so the wad sits higher on the powder allowing less headroom for lead AEBE.

It actually doesn't change the chamber pressure much if at all. What does get affected is the wad column height.

Not a lot but enough to sometimes make the difference between a flat crimp and a concave or convex crimp depending on the load.

I have used SG 16S in 2-1/2" shells, sometimes with 1 ounce of shot. The shorter wad column allows a better crimp.

It's all about stack height. The SG16S sits lower hence more room for shot. All those little fingers hold the SG16 higher making it a ideal 7/8 oz wad. I use it in almost all my target loads.

The SG16 wad in Iowa must be shorter then. In my 2.5" shells it is too short with 1 oz loads to be honest. I upped to 1.14 oz loads and it's just about perfect.

That's wonderful,You should notify BPI of your findings. I'm sure they would be interested. Perhaps they'll do a pressure test to see what that extra 1/4 oz of shot does in a 1oz recipe.

It's a 1 1/8 oz recipe and 1.14 is 0.015 oz in excess of 1 1/8.

Brent,

Something is wrong, I load 1 oz. in a 2 3/4” hulls with that wad with no trouble. The loads for doing this have been around and been used for years. At least 25 years.

I don't know. I've only done my 2.5" cases with it. It is the only 16 I have. Normally, I have loaded with black powder.
