I know we get a birds/guns/dogs/etc. thread going each year, but lets do things a little differently for a moment. I think all of the dogs deserve their own special gallery here. I mean, why not? It only makes sense considering all of the burrs they crash trough, the hot days when they would sweat profusely if only they had the ability, the icy mornings when they shiver, wet and cold, as they wait for the next duck to drop from a leaden sky, the stinging little twigs that certainly must whip them in the eyes and nose as they charge through cover, the snow drifts they bound through in order to close in on that rooster they smell as if it were smoldering, and the many miles their paws travel for each of ours.
They save us from walking ourselves into the ground and bring back birds that we would never see again, without criticizing the fact that we should have hit the bird more squarely in the first place. How about it? Let's see those dog photos.
It's no secret I have a weakness for border collies and setters and since I pitched this whole idea, I will start with a pic many of you may have already viewed here: Mr. Rusty and the chukar.

This photo is from my dog, Darby's first hunting trip. She was 4 months old at the time. We hunted 3 days in NW Iowa. I got back to the hotel room after a long day of hunting. I went to use the rest room and when I stepped out, Darby was sound asleep on top of my guns and gear.

Where are all the labs?!?! Here is a pic of my 8 month old (around 5 months in the pics) going out on his first few days of duck and goose hunting. He hated not seeing the birds come in so he was peeking out over the top of the blind. Note: not me in the picture.

Willa, 4, Abby, 7, confined to the harsh reality of a cold, concrete kennel floor and isolated from human contact where all dogs should be when not hunting..

Here are a couple of Dixie our American Water Spaniel. She's going to be 12 next month and has taught us a lot about bird hunting.

You have it right there rudyc, your dog can teach you just as much about bird huntung over the years as you can teach it! I enjoyed fourteen good years with my brittany, Ginger, and only have a few old photos but many good memories that will last forever. It has been 16 years since she went to bird dog heaven but I still remember the good times we had and tear up as I type this comment. |

Here are my two renegade GSP's. Bode, the 8 year old on the left, just ran his first field trial this year after recovering from TPLO surgery for a torn ligament. I blew my whistle to release him for the trial and the old dog immediately opened up a large lead on his bracemate, hit the northern trial ground boundary, swung right to the northeast corner, and streaked down to the southern boundary to point his first bird at the 2 minute 14 second mark. I hurried down there all out of breath (hey, I'm 76 years old) only to find the quail up and running. It popped when I was 25 yards out as I tried to get the gun on it, catch my breath and keep from falling flat on my face all at the same time. Well, at least I didn't fall down as the quail escaped out of bounds. The rest of his run went better, although he worked me like a rented mule the whole time. I'm declaring the surgery a success. I was worried about his conditioning after a 6 month layoff, now I'm worried about mine.
The three year old, Rebel on the right carried the bird hunting load all season and really did well. Down in Alabama on our group's annual quail hunt. Me, a 73 year old and a 69 year old teamed up and hunted behind Rebel. The other 4 guys, all in their 50's hunted behind their 4 dogs. On all 6 hunts, the 3 old guys with the one dog ended up with more quail than the 4 younger guys and their 4 dogs. Rebel was exceptionally solid all season long and paced himself perfectly. Out in Montana at the first of the season, I was able to hunt Rebel every day without any problems other than losing a few pounds.

Gil, I see that we both have the same make and model of harsh, cold, concrete kennel floor! Poor dogs.
Byron & Rudy, so true, so true. A man will learn a lot about bird behavior by simply watching the dog, uninterrupted.
Riflemeister, running, out of breath and nearly falling down...if I didn't know better I would swear you were hunting chukars!
To everybody else, I'm loving the dog pictures and stories. This is fun, keep them coming! |

Great idea to post our bird dogs.
This is Birch my youngest setter with his first wild bird a couple of years ago
Here is Drummer after we passed through the cover behind us
Drummer at work
This is the niece of Birch the day my buddy and I picked her up in PA. She has turned into a fine bird dog and she resides in Drummond, WI.
Good Hunting,

Here is a Breton I had for 10 yrs & three days. He was a rescue dog and didn't know a bird from rock when He came to us. He made the journey to being a fine grouse dog & a decent Phez dog over the course of his first Season. He came to us March 1st 2007 just a shade over two years old. He became my personal appointed companion:
He was pretty versatile:
June 2016 saw him with a serious infection in the l.f. leg. This morphed into a cancer in the nerve sheath same leg. As time went by it got worse. He was hunting on three legs and happily so on an occasional basis. His overall health was pretty good for a few months. I had to have him put down March 4th 2017. It was a very tough choice as He was still pretty functional on three legs. Problem was the cancer erupted under the left front leg into an open wound. The wound started going septic
(smelled like rotting hamburger). The Vet said a very undesirable hard "crash" was imminent so we took him for his final vet visit. I still get something in my eye thinking of this. Anyway here is a pic of Chase & his last bird pointed & shot over him in December 2016. Took him for a short hunt & about 5 minutes in He went on point.
He was always a Happy Dog. |

Sorry to hear all that, Steve. He was a nice dog.
That red Lund boat on a north country lake looks mighty good right now. |
