Who do I speak with or where do I go to identify the age and origin of a 16 ga German made "guild" SXS?

What is the real story behind "guild" guns?

Hello bigfastfish
WELCOME on your first posting

We can assist

Start here

http://www.shotguns.se/html/germany_1890-1945.html

The proof marks and other marking should tell us lots about your shotgun

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guild

A guild /ɡɪld/ is an association of artisans or merchants who oversee the practice of their craft in a particular town. The earliest types of guild were formed as confraternities of tradesmen. They were organized in a manner something between a professional association, trade union, a cartel, and a secret society.

Need pics of the gun, especially the barrel flats and markings on the barrels. Good quality pics that show the details. If your gun was made after 1922 it should have a date stamp in mm/yy format on the barrel flats. There were some guns that had a date stamp that were made earlier than 1922 but those are not as common.

You can also go the German gun sub-forum at Shotgun World for info.

The German Gun Collectors Association has been very helpful in this type of search

I just picked up a beautiful little 16 ga hammer gun that I believe is German from the proof marks. It has no makers name that I can find. I am taking it to the Southeren SXS, the German Gun Collectors Assoc. always has a booth there, and hopefully they can enlighten me. I need to try and post pictures. It is very light--under 6 lbs, has 30"(29 3/4 metric), choked cyl/full, fluid steel, 2 1/2" chambers, Cheek piece, and sling swivels.Nicely engraved, and best of all picked it up for $300.
I like shooting hammer guns--always draws alot of looks at the sporting clays range.

Big Fast Fish,

Welcome to the 16 forum, SkeetTX and the guys have given you some good into, you might also try the Shooting Sportsman forum, a few of the members over there are big into German double guns, and have some contact you might find interesting.

Great start

16 gauge with 65mm chambers
Nitro proofed.

1891-1939 for Crown U
According to German proof law of 1891 Long guns (rifles, shotguns, drillings and so on) had only one crown over U - c/U.
