Since California is going to non toxic shot for all hunting in 2019 I need to start building some loads that will be legal. I'm thinking 7/8 oz of #6 or #7 steel shot.
Has anybody been down this road?
|
We have a few non toxic only waterfowl areas here that allow hunting of other species. 7's are useless 6's or 5's will work on doves, quail, rabbits, etc. No matter what anybody says, from ACTUAL in the field experience with smaller shot sizes keep your load speeds up or your going to be disappointed. I shoot 7/8 oz of smaller steel between 1500 and 1600 fps, works very well. |

I tried steel on pheasants 4’s and 5’s but........Bismuth 5’s are like shooting lead 6’s.
YMMV...........but I doubt it.
The other reason I like bismuth........I can shoot it in every shotgun I own. |

I just wish Bismuth was a little more economical
Expensive stuff. |

Maybe try steel 3's, I shoot them for ducks at 1600 fps and they work real well out to 40 -42 yards. |

I don't mind steel. I like 3's in steel. Are you shooting 7/8 oz? |

7/8 oz with STEEL powder will give you 1600 fps, 15/16 oz goes 1540 fps with STEEL. I've killed mallard sized ducks with 3's out to 40-42 yards with no problems using the 7/8 oz load. |

I hunt a great deal with a 16 gauge Stevens SxS using steel shot.
I use 7/8 oz of #4 and #3 steel (published velocity 1560 fps) for pheasants. I shot several birds in both Iowa and Michigan this past season and did not loose any cripples with it.
I did try some #5 bismuth and it is very effective, but I am not sure it is worth the extra expense. |
