I prefer to load Winchester compression formed, but most of my hull supply consists of Herter's and older Federals. |

Yes...Jarts. We had a set as kids. Luckily we did not form any holes in our feet using them, which seems a miracle considering our lack of restraint back then. |

MaximumSmoke and OHwirehair
From what others have shared on here and from my pressure testing I have found that the Federals allow more FPS or payload when pushing the upper limits of pressure.
I don't know why I only get 1-2 reloads, it is frustrating. But the mouths start to split sometimes after 1 but almost always after 2 reloading. I do only reload federal for waterfowl and the load I use is up around 11200 PSI so maybe that has something to do with the short life span. But I push some of my chedittes to the those same pressures and they last 4 or more reloads.
If anyone is looking to sell once fired federals let me know. |

The Win compression formed hulls were basically AA hulls for 16 ga. Mike doesn't think they are all that special, but my experience is that they are very nice to work with. The tapered walls eliminate ant powder leakage with stuff like Longshot and the slightly reduced internal volume is great for loading 5/8 and 3/4 oz. ammo like I use for targets and blue/ruffed grouse hunting.
I actually prefer the Herter's/ Cheddite for 1 1/8 oz loads though, especially the buffered stuff. One advantage of the euro style hulls is the lower chamber pressures they exhibit and that's helpful when you plan to add buffer (raises pressure). |

To add a bit, think the confusion there lies in the fact all Winchester 16 gauge loads now use Cheddite hulls. As Mike stated the compression formed hulls haven't been made in 20 years for that matter Winchester hasn't made 16 gauge shells in the U.S. for about the same amount of time they are made and have been made by Winchester Australia, just look at the side panel of your shell box and it says Made in Australia. Winchester Australia uses Cheddite hulls exclusively for the 16 gauge loads so there's the connection. |

Another hull that I used to love loading was the Activ hull back in the 80's and early 90's. They worked great for my trap and skeet shooting back in the day. |

While the RGL's take more effort and are generally a pain at times (most of the time) to reload their small capacity just seems to be ideal for the light target type loads. I have a lot of the older RGL's which seem to last a lot longer, plus a good stash of the older green Express hulls which are really nice. Can't say they are my favorite to reload, but they make good ammo.
My growing mountain of Herter's Cheditte's are on deck, and another mountain of Federals wait in the wings. So many hulls, so little time. |

Completely agree Dave. I just wish the Rems would live a little longer.
Mike Campbell, I have 2 boxes of new paper 16 ga Federals that are yellow and primed. I have had them for about 10 years, one of these days I am going to use them in my Hunter Special just for grins. I have no idea how old they really are. |
