We will be needing a 16 ga buckshot load as a close range backup round for predator calling for Black bear and cougar. Some areas here are overrun with these rascals, and they are wiping out the deer.

The buckshot will go in the top barrel of the combination gun. Lower barrel is 8X57R, plenty enough for anything around here, but sometimes a stopper is needed.

Any recommendations for suitable buckshot size for these critters in 2 3/4" 16 ga shells? Will probably use roll crimp.

For a close range bear stopper I would much rather use a slug than buckshot. Penetration is the key and nothing does better than a slug. More Alaskan guides carry a shotgun with slugs for recover of clients game because of the likelihood of dealing with bears up close and personal.
They can also use the same gun with light loads for camp meat.

Lyman in most of their 16 gauge load recipes recommends 12 pellets of #1 Buckshot.
Think I'm with Byron on this use a slug if you can, Federal makes a 7/8 oz 16 gauge slug load going 1600 fps. May be the difference between pizzing off a bear and actually stopping one.

I don’t have much faith in buckshot past maybe 20 yards. Factory shot is usually soft giving poor penetration and patterns are often unpredictable. I would suggest a GOOD slug load. Brenneke 16ga 1 oz slugs are hard alloy, 60 +- caliber, have a flat, square shoulder, and an advertised MV of 1580fps. Accuracy is usually good or better in most smoothbores and down range penetration has been excellent in my experience.

That said, I have never shot a bear with one but have taken several white tails at different entry angles and never recovered a bullet. Inside 50 yards I would not hesitate to take on any North American animal with them.

I keep #1 buck loaded in my mossberg 16ga with 18 in barrel for predators hanging around my chicken coup, figure it would be enough for coons and coyts.

I've never loaded buckshot and very rarely shot it or slugs, so no experience here. However, I've always understood that the main reason one sees #1 buck in 16 ga. and mostly #00 buck in 12 ga. is that these diameters of shot, respectively, "stack" optimally in the two gauges, filling shot hull space better than any other large sizes. (Try loading #00 in a 20 gauge hull and you'll see what I mean!).

I’ve killed wagonloads of whitetails ahead of hounds with buckshot out to sixty yards, but I’m like the others when I’d want slugs against a bear.
