I realized I haven't been on here in forever, since I came on a couple of years ago asking questions about the chamber length in the beater Model 1912 I had just found.
Anyway, it turned out that it was already lengthened for modern shells, and someone had even opened up the ejection port, too.
I finally sent it off to Mike Orlen, and had the forcing cone lengthened and cleaned up, and the choke opened to IC.
Last month, up on my NE WA land, we got our first blue grouse with that gun. Me and the dog are both beginners, so we have to work pretty hard for our successes. Thought I should share a pic back in here.
Since then, three more random old 16 gauge shotguns have found their way into my life...
Thanks, all!

red,
Congrats on a fine hunt, got to love the old 16 guns, now you need a LeFever, or a Fox double gun, maybe serious L.C. Smith, a good old American classic Double gun!

One of the ones I just picked up last month is an LC Smith Field grade.
Crack in the stock that needs repaired, lots of carry wear, and a very small barrel ding that I need to get out. 26" barrels. Definitely a working gun. Not sure of the date, or the chamber length on that one yet. Been considering having the chokes opened up, they're pretty tight, and this gun isn't really "special" or a collector, anyway. I'd like to be able to use it in the woods without disintegrating any bird I hit with it.
And then yesterday I came home with an 1897 Winchester with CYL bore, well worn, 28" barrel, and an H&R Topper M48 with a MOD choke, and some wear. Gave almost nothing for that one... |

Congratulations on the nice collection and fine hunting companion! The M97 has a pretty rare barrel length/choke combination and should be a very useful shooter. |

Very VERY Nice pictures!
Great dog and gun!
Gentle recoil, load it sensibly and you'll be fine. Good move on the forceing cone work, IMHO.
