Gentlemen,

I just made a deal on an Antique Crescent 16 gauge Hammer gun, with one of the members of the 16 gauge forum. Not only do I want to thank the gentlemen, I want him to know I am very grateful for the double gun, I have been looking for one for quite some time.

The gun will be restored to it's original company sales condition and will be used for bird hunting. Mostly Grouse, Woodcock and Pheasant hunting, here in the Potter County, Pa mountains. Great American made classic double guns for the American Sportsman. Want a 28 gauge just like it.

I am looking forward to receiving the old Crescent 16 Hammer gun in the near future. Believe I will restore the stocks myself.

Pictures when I receive the gun.

WJ,

Looking forward to receiving the shipment of the Antique Crescent 16 gauge Hammer gun for sure, I have always liked these old Crescent guns, kept the 12 gauge my father left for me, although I seldom use that particular gun. The 16 gauge Hammer gun will be a completely different story, I really miss the 16 gauge L.C. Smith Hammer Gun I gifted to another man one time.

The antique Crescent 16 gauge will get used for Grouse, Woodcock and Pheasant hunting quite a bit. Cliff tells me she has 28" barrels and 2 1/2" changers, the old girl will fit right in with my L.C. guns for sure.

Classic American made double guns, ya got to love em.

Gentlemen,

My Antique Crescent 16 Gauge Hammer Gun arrived today, Mirror Bores, and everything works perfectly. Weight 6.2 Lbs, 2 1/2" Chambers, 28" Steel Barrels, DT, made in Norwich, CT long before I was ever born. Gun swings nicely and fits me well, with both hunting vest & Browning Goretx Grouse Jacket. Can't wait to use her this coming Grouse & Woodcock season. It will definitely be a good Pheasant Gun also, for late season Pheasant hunting. Will probably use SpredR loads in her for Grouse & Woodcock. I will need to pattern her before Grouse season.

By the time you are done with it, if it looks anything like some of the other beautiful pieces you have posted, it will be spectacular.

hayseed,

I am almost tempted to leave this gun in it's original state, however I will probably restore at least the American Walnut stocks, even though they are in very good shape. The felt spacer in the Butt Stock, probably installed in the late 40's or early 50's is still in perfect condition also, Triggers are light and clean, Hammers are in perfect shape, the perfect Steel Barrels have Mirror Bores, with a small Brass single sight bead at the very end of the Barrels, great stuff for a 100 year old Hammer Gun. No doubt thru the ages this Hammer Gun was decently cared for by it's owners, and hunted with often, proud to add it to the Grouse Gun collection.

Classic American made, 16 Gauge Hammer Gun, I love it.

That thing is in great shape, especially for a Crescent. The Crescent guns were not high dollar guns and unfortunately that resulted in a lot of neglect for most of them. Too many people just regarded them as an implement. Glad you found one that somebody cared about enough to keep in good shape. Oh, and I was unaware they made a 28 ga. Might as well go for the 5 gauge set, hint, hint.

WyoChukar,

You are definitely correct, these guns were made originally for the average middle income American hunter, many were used and abused because of the cost, however the actual engineering design of the guns was very decent. Not on the par with an L.C. Smith, or Fox, they have no Brown Rotary Bolt to drive the cost up. However the Hodges Breech work, Steel Barrels and the American Walnut Wood were/are both seriously nice.

Yep they made more 28 gauge Crescent Hammer Guns then they did 16's.
Another man would like me to purchase one that he restored, and it's a beauty, however he has some money wrapped up in the restoration, and will not let it go at what I believe is a reasonable price. Still have not sold our old home and can not go the money he wants for the gun all at one time.

I may however send him what I can afford a month at a time, if he would agree to it. Double Mortgage payments right now are playing havoc with my gun purchasing money.

I actually owned a 20 ga. hammerless long ago. I used it a lot on blue grouse and ducks since it was choked cyl. & I/C. I have been pondering getting a .410 as a custom project.

WyoChukar,

Can understand owning the Crescent 20 gauge hammerless double gun, there were many of them here in the Pittsburgh, Pa gun shows, most were beat up pretty badly. However those that were in good shape were properly priced and turned over quickly.

Had a buddy of mine who owned one, DT 28" Barrels, he killed a lot of Pheasant in Lancaster County, Pa with 6's. He never had a problem with the gun either and use 2 3/4 Paper shells in the old 2 1/2" Chambers.

Having real good 20 gauge L.C. Smith double guns in the family I saw no need to pick up a 20 gauge Crescent. The guns were actually pretty nice however, if you could find one that had not been used to drive fence posts.

Great stuff. Love the appreciation for a working man’s double.
