SW16-real wood BUL-fake wood
SW16-metal rib BUL-plastic rib
Those are two things that stand out to me.
The BUL is a nice upland auto. I prefer the A5 platform after having both.

I hear ya, Dave.
The only way I can make that determination is to acquire a new SW-16.
As you know, I've been on a roll lately.
The shuffling isn't over yet.
ONe of the Auto 5's is likely to be on the sacrificial alter of GAS. |

Remember the comment I made on your humpback trajectory? My buddies who have been loyal Auto-5 fans (myself included) have (almost) all ended up with the new A5-SW16 and aren't looking back. |

Yes---but isn't the journey necessary?

It is indeed! And it's a fine, fine journey. Mine lasted a long time. |

Yup--this was very obvious to me this last week on the panhandle prairie.
That 16 Iside was a pleasure as compared to so many. |

The perfect autoloader for the upland hunter. Kudos to Cold Iron and Dave. Now if Browning would follow their lead.

There needs to be a fun filled side by side comparison with a BUL and the new Sweet.
Ignoring the gauge of course and the fact that neither are SxSs.
|
23" Sweet 16 compared to 26" 12 ga. BUL
In addition to what was already mentioned the Sweet 16 rib is flat to the point that the receiver is also part of the sighting plane. The sighting plane on the Sweet 16 is much longer than the high rib BUL with the ramp on it.
The BUL is my go to gun for pheasants in SD. I prefer 1 1/4oz. of #5 for wild phez. so use a 12 ga. for them. However last week I cleaned Rogers Sporting out of the Federal Heavyweight 2 oz. turkey loads on clearance for the #7 15g/cc shot. Ended up with almost 12 pounds a lot cheaper than I could buy it in bulk from BPI. Going to experiment this summer with 1 oz. 16 ga. #7 15g/cc loads for pheasants. They should be equal or actually better than 1 1/4 oz. of lead #5's. Cost will work out to around $1 a shell which I don't consider outrageous considering how few shots are fired during a season. The Sweet 16 may very well replace my BUL when it is all said and done, time will tell.
Like Dave said those new A5's are addicting and I may pick up another in 26" for SD. But looking at the length of the 23" compared to the BUL not so sure... Mine is in Washington State right now having an outstanding craftsman work on converting the steep radius grip to a traditional round knob. |

Cold Iron,
Great idea on the sale at Rodgers for less than bulk at BPI. Plus you get "free" primed hulls. You missed the Federal 12ga 1 & 7/8 loads. Just got some. They also had 10ga 2oz in both #6 & #7 shot.
And that gun is beautiful... |

I look forward to hunting wild pheasant next season and discovering what works well for me.
I suspect the 12g BUL will work as may the Belgian Auto 5 Magnum 20.
Its quite possible that the Belgian Auto 5 Light 12 will be converted to a new SW 16.
Time will tell.
I like Dave's conversion, but think a POW would look nice as well. |

A POW would be outstanding, but it takes a wood graft to achieve. Looking forward to seeing Cold Iron’s, and the really cool thing is we'll be shooting these little gems together this year. Maybe Browning will pay us royalties when they finally wise up.

Maybe they will---I'm thinking they should.
I will lobby. |

After I cleaned out the 2 oz. I picked up some of the 1 7/8 oz. that were on sale also Don't even own a gun that can take 3.5" shells so not sure what I will do with the hulls etc.
Have you loaded them in the 16 yet? I emailed BPI for data and they sent me a PDF file with a few more loads than they have in the load of the week and on the 15 g/cc page. But still not a lot of information out there for the 16 that I can find. Do you slit the CSD16 wads? And Thanks! |
