Folks, what do you think, looking at a new A-5 browning. Do you think 26" or 28" barrel? Or would you hold out for an original A-5 Japan made with choke tubes, or Remington 1100 with choke tubes? Decisions, decisions.? What say you?

MORE DATA

Are you hunting Woodcock in Oregon?

What will be the use?

What is the normal shot distance for you?

Lots of carry or in a blind?

Clays only?

Thanks
Mike

The 26" new A5 is a very nice handling gun.

The Japanese production Auto-5 is an excellent gun as well, but heavier than the Belgium Sweet 16. The Japanese guns are within 3 to 5 oz. of the Belian STANDARDWEIGHT...not a bad thing at all, just something to keep in mind

I have a 26" and a 28" new A5 Sweet 16 and a 28" 12ga A5 new model
I like the 26" better. In fact I am thinking of sending the 28" off to be cut to 22-24"

I have a 26" Japanese sweet, and I have a 22" original browning barrel, not cut, for it also. Love the short barrel, but even better, I have a Belgain sweet in 26" but I can put the 22" Jap barrel on it and now I have a pretty light gun for quail, grouse etc in the brush.

I have a Mag 12 stalker in 28" heavy brute, but is duck/goose gun so not a big deal.
I have a Belgian light 12 in 26" and it carries ok, but is heavy compared to everything else I carry, but wouldn't trade it for anything. Looking to get a shorter Japanese made barrel for it too.

should have finished my thought...
Remington 1100 in 16ga is same as carrying the 12ga 1100, at least the ones I have handled. (wanted to get one for teal hunting, but just as well carry a 12ga)

The New A5 sweets are very light weight, will make good chicken/sharptail guns, but I prefer rounded grip, but alas, can't have it all I guess.

You could buy a nice Belgian sweet 16 and then look for a Miroku barrel for it to your liking, will be lighter set up than just a Japanese model

But too much thought, they are all good, I like and can shoot them all very well.
so you may be agonizing or thinking too much.
Won't go wrong with whatever direction you go, although I am not fan of the 1100

If you're going new A5 SW16 I'd go 26". If you're mainly waterfowling then the Japanese Sweet 16 would be my first choice.

Sounds like you want choke tubes, so that rules out the classic Belgian.

Thanks for the info. everybody. Would probably use the gun for Pheasant, Chukar, and Ducks. Definitely wanted choke tubes because of steel shot requirements in a lot of places. This will not be my primary shotgun. Was leery of any gun fussy about digesting light steel shot shells.

Great post !

Spare gun, I would opt for the screw-in choke gun with 26 inch barrels

Handy in the duck blind,
Light enough for a walking around gun Smile

Think I'm going to go with the New A-5 Sweet Sixteen. Remington 1100 16 is on the heavy side. Probably go with the 26", should work good on the uplands and fine for steel shot if I want to take it to the duck blind now and then.

Good choice. I had a Japenese era with 26 inch and really unusually high grade wood but I found myself not taking it out much because of the weight. I shot the 26&28 in versions of the new A5, bought the 26 and sold the Japenese era. Only thing I miss is that wood. Look at Reeds Sporting in Minnesota. Theyre a large Browning seller and have their spring sale coming up in April. Usually ship for free too.

For what you are doing and the fact that you want an autoloader, the new A5 makes the most sense. It's a lighter gun and should be pretty well designed with steel shot in mind.

Finally picked up my new A-5, wanted a 26" barrel but settled on a limited edition 2018 Ducks Unlimited model with 28" barrel. and fancy engraving and gold inlay on the receiver. 2018 circa. Never been fired in the box with all paperwork and accessories. Some old lady pawned it off at the pawn shop for a few hundred dollars. Took it home for several hundred less than a standard blued model would have cost me. They just recently dropped the retail on it by $500.00. Can't wait to use it this fall, after waiting 4 years to purchase one finally got a good deal.

Sounds like a great catch. I got my Model 12 for the outrageous price of $85.00 a couple of years ago. The guy I bought it from never shot it and didn't even know that it could be broken down.
