Oh believe me, if I drew them today, there would be a border collie.

I lived in Green River Wy for about a year as a teenager in the mid 70's. I remember a friend and I were walking the river bottom one afternoon and carrying my father's single action Colt 22lr revolver, using it to take pot shots at jack rabbits. We finished up our hunt where the river came into the town limits, so instead of backtracking, we decided to climb up the bank onto the main road and walk home from there. As we headed into town, we walked by the local Radio Shack, and decided to stop in to check out the latest stereo equipt inside. I remember quite clearly how we stood outside the store with me holding pop's pistol (no holster) and discussing how to best proceed. I knew it might be bad form to walk into a place I'd never been with a pistol in my hand, but I also knew I better not be stupid enough to leave it outside un-attended. So I sent my friend in ahead as I waited outside while he explained the situation to the proprietor and obtained permission for me to bring the gun inside. I specifically offered to leave it on the counter as we browsed, but he was ok with us bringing it in and not brandishing it around in order to look around. I could sense even then that things were a changing, but it seemed that some simple common sense was all that was needed. Now I would doubt that we would be given the same flexibility as teenagers in this day.

I'm late to it, but this thread is great! Thanks all for the stories, many of which echo the experiences of my youth in rural North Dakota in the '60's. We didn't take guns into our schoolhouse, but everyone had access to them (their own, mind you), and the stories of unlocked cars and guns in them were the standard thing in that day. I can't remember ever locking a car in our small towns. Hell, I never took the keys out of my ignition except to open the trunk -- didn't ever need to in the pick-up. I never locked my car until I went to The University of ND in "the big city". My dad drove one of the school buses and picked the route with the most game. He always had his Model 12 in the bus. Picking up the kids in the morning, he'd scout the geese and ducks as well as the sharptails and huns and then go hunting after bringing the kids to school. Dad would give us boys the scouting report so we could hunt the birds after school.

There are so many examples in this thread of the "naturalness" of gun possession, hunting and hunting land access in US culture. I wish everyone could read all of your posts, guys. We need to be reminded of how different the US is from the rest of the world, and was from its very foundation, and the reasons why. Intelligent, capable and exasperated people world-wide still aspire to leave their more despotically and socialistically governed native countries to live in the US. It is sad to see that, as this country moves towards more socialism and our young children are fed a propagandized and idealistic view of multi-nationalism, our US culture and our rights are being destroyed.

WyoChukar -- I especially appreciate the sketches/illustrations you provided. These are great forms of folk art. You definitely had and have a talent! Thanks.

Cheers!
