Wasn't it Dizzy Gillespie that played a horn like that?

Reno

I believe you are correct. I have never heard an explanation as to why he used that configuration.

I'm thinking a Cutts or Poly-choke would have made for a nasty shooting experience when the barrel was in it's tangent configuration.

this has been my answer to the post on heavy squirrel loads ... once the barrel was straightened out , it has run something like 35 straight squirrels - both near and far . Only miss was a lefty shot at running beast . 24grms 7.5 shot .

75 bucks and it's CHERRY !

Here's what happened. The owner was reloading one day and he ran out of the Cheerios he was using for a filler to make good crimps and with only one shell left for a full box he spotted his bottle of Viagra.

"Hmmm, this ought to work!"

Yeah Mark .. it actually straightened OK - just had a little hump we couldn't get out completely ... now , with my new shooting style , I decided this was the candidate for some down bending . It was easy getting it to flat , but a real B**** to go down . Now has about 5 degrees of down angle to shoot where I look .

In my college days I bought a Remington Model 17 in a dark gunshop, not noticing the bend in the barrel till I got it home. Not only did it have a considerable kink starting just in front of the magazine tube lug, someone had apparently shot some steel ball bearings of probably between #4 buck and #1 buck size through it (remember, a Model 17 is a 20 gauge). It had four tracks embossed down the barrel, and four "lobes" at the choke end -- subtle, but very visible. Someone had straightened the barrel, but the "kink" was still there. The 30" full choke barrel was not buckled by the bend nor was it far out of round at the bend. It simply had a sharp left turn followed by a gradual S-bend over the next 6 or 12 inches back to the right. There was no repair done to the choke end. It shot and patterned very well, so the fellow who straightened it did a good job functionally, if not cosmetically. That goes to show you how un-critical the dimensions and profiles of shotgun barrels can be. I shot a lot of long range ducks with that gun back in the lead shot era. I'm sorry I traded it, along with a 16 gauge Model 12, a 20 gauge Stevens single shot, and a clapped out 16 gauge 11-48 in one fell swoop, for a Ruger Red Label 28 gauge. I'm also slightly sorry I eventually divested myself of that particular 28 gauge, but that's another story.

Cheers!
Tony

with all the bending and twisting , the last 12'' or so are still original round and the choke unmolested . I figured the middle part isn't really that important ! I originally mounted a 2X4 on a heavy 1/2 sheet of plywood , and used another 2X4 held on by clamps to do the original bending . The bending was quite easy - just flinched on that last bend where the barrel was being torqued !! No one EVER thought that barrel would shoot again !! (had a HOOT of talks with skeettx about shot direction and curved barrels . You'd think the bends were important , but he being a master ENG , can point out a bout a million influences on the shot ! Mainly , if that load goes where it was supposed to , it's a BIG WIN ! )
