I am really liking the RST 3/4 ounce #8 shot, very little kick and pattern well at 40 yards out of my full choke. Are any of you guys using these on doves?

I shoot the rst 7/8oz 7.5 on doves. I enjoy 3/4oz loads for skeet but not sure how comfortable I'd be with that payload on doves.

Love 3/4 oz in the DR16 wad over 17 grains of GD for skeet and informal clays. I would like to do 7/8 oz for doves but do patterns suffer when shot is outside the wad? Bore scrub?

5/8 oz and some choke will take doves further than a 27 yard trap target distance , 3/4 oz with some choke is simply more load than the vast majority has the ability to hit with .

Your RST 3/4 oz is a wonderful load .

Are we talking about the same bird that most outdoor writers say it takes 3-5 boxes of shells for the average shotgunner to take a 15 bird limit?

Keep in mind that doves are small birds--take a good look at a dove breast the next time you set down to eat them. They come out of the air easily and don't run off on the ground, but you still got to hit 'em.

While 3/4 oz. with take doves with little or moderate choke if they are at respectable distances, AC is probably on cue when he talks about using lots of choke at 40 yards.

Several months back, a respected gun writer published on the 28 gauge for quail and showed a quail target with a pattern on it. While 4 or 5 shots had hit within the outline of a flaring quail (most of the time, one is shooting at their rear), 2 were in wing feathers, one was in a leg, one in the gut, and one barely grazed the breast. To me, probably a crippled quail that will fly off and die. When I corresponded with the writer, he admitted that almost all of his quail hunting is on pen raised birds.

The vast majority of dove hunters I've been around use 7/8 oz 20s or 1 oz 16s or 12s to hunt with. Even then, most of them miss far more birds than they hit.

My take; use 3/4 oz and a full choke if you are an excellent wing shot. If you are like me; use more shot and a more open choke. And hope the doves are coming within 25 or 30 yards and a strong wind ain't blowing. I've been known to kill a limit with less than a box of shells, but it wasn't on a day with 40 yards pass shooting at doves with a 15 mph tailwind.

I will bring some spreaders just in case.I retired my 12 ga. Mod and imp superposed cause I really like the sxs 16 ga. Sauer 271/2 full and full, since I found this forum and RST shells the 16 ga. I now own a gun that will be very versatile.

Skeettx,

Texas is definitely a big Dove hunting state, it was one of my buddy Don Moody favorite hunting sports. Here in Pa Dove hunting is popular, however not any where near as popular as our Grouse and Woodcock hunting.

Aurelio,

The German name is Krupp on the Barrels, however I understood exactly what you meant.

Would love to see some pictures of the gun, drop them in my E-mail Pine-Creek@live.com I will post them here for you.
