My modest collection of Peters Victor stuff (plus 2 wood shotgun shell boxes-a 16 with the original shipping label to Wichita and a 12)

Found this neat shell box yesterday at the only decent gun show in Phoenix (where BTW there were alot more nice SxSs among the military and cowboy stuff, big game rifles, and junk) I've never seen a 16g Monark Skeet box.

The Ruark paperback copies of The Old Man and the Boy and The Horn of the Hunter I bought at a Katz drugstore in KC when I was about 13 and they, and Boy Scouts, changed the direction of my life.

Nor have I Rev !! What a neat box! I see Mike Campbell had a similar one in his photo of "Target Loads" for 16Ga. I wish the 16Ga "target load" had developed more... It could have given us a target hull today...

Federal's transitional period of which your box is one, is probably my favorite era, as there were product specs that only lasted months. I see a purple paper hull picture on the side of the box it appears..... Are these loads 2 3/4" or still 2 9/16"?

Federal was moving fast at the time your example was loaded. Maroon paper to purple paper for a brief period; and then purple plastic.... 2 9/16" to 2 3/4"...... The birth of the color-coded shell which Federal conceived...

I never saw a Federal load (box) that said "wadless crimp" on it! I use to shoot Federal loads in the last of the paper era that were roll crimped and advertised on the box as having a "frangible top wad" I still experiment today with roll crimp loads trying to duplicate Federal's old wad that came out of the barrel indeed in many pieces! Regretably, not a single box with the "frangible" remains with me..

Thanks for the photos and old memories Rev! I'd love to see a photo of the side of the box with the purple shell if you could...

Thanks for sharing to you and the others.

2 more shots Slide-guy. Very interesting-the box is clearly labeled SECONDS with a blank spot on the bottom. The dealer was from N. Dakota and said Federal would write in the load in pencil (which is still apparent and looks like 'max 6 16g' and '1952.' The shells are high brass roll crimped with a card top labeled 'MAXIMUM 6 LOAD' and look to be 2 3/4"

"I think it's the sexiest hull that was ever manufactured"

Shotgun shells sexy Question Maybe to one of those stubby Parker Putz guys Wink

Great boxes Mike and yes, the loads in my box were the 'max load' 4s.

There's a movement (struggling) on doubleunshop.com to get someone to make a paper 16 hull. I think this old Federal hull should be the prototype.
It's short and, if it can't be red, at least it's a very attractive purple to me.
I think it's the sexiest hull that was ever manufactured..notice it's an 8-POINT CRIMP paper hull; I've never seen that anywhere else.

Mike,

I agree with the quote above!!

WOW! Those are neat loads, especially for their time! I am wondering now if Federal sired the eight point crimp as well?? The "Ch" or chilled puts them quite early which seems to say Federal was "onto" color-coding very early on!
I went to a 1940 "Shooter's Bible" and all the major manufacturers were using a "crimp" on their target loads.. (all but 28Ga and .410) UNFORTUNATELY Federal brand was not listed there. Every brand listed (Remington, Peters, Winchester, Western) just stated "crimp" on the trap and skeet loads! I remember these and all were 6-point crimps that I ever saw. Maybe just before plastic an 8-point paper appeared in Rem-Peters ?? I just can't remember now...but your photos appear earlier than that era.. Early on (40's-50's), Rem-Peters had a paper "seal" over the 6 point crimp with load data that included the "Ch" for a while! I remember those!
It seems to me that Federal was leading the improvements and change back then..... If only they would step up to the plate now.!!! I have wanted an STS 16Ga hull for aeons, but after these pictures I want a 16Ga plastic "Gold Medal" and ALSO A "GOLD MEDAL PAPER" now!!
And of course I want them at 2 9/16" length so the short chambered guys can play too!!

I have to edit in that I see your old boxes Mike, even show the powder loaded in the shells!!!!!

I was given these a few days ago. Two boxes of 20ga and three boxes of 16. The box on top is 1 1/8oz of #5s in 16. I'll bet they'll liven up the LC Shocked

Do you have a old 2-1/2 or 2-9/16 Redhead box? Mike

When I saw the box of Remington Sure Shot I thought "well those aren't old". But I forgot that Remington quit making Sure Shot for the 16 gauge. I still have a box of 16 gauge Sure Shot with an unusual load. It's a 1oz load of BB with 2 1/2 dm of powder. They pattern surprisingly well.

Nice variety there wildweasel! I particularly like the Winchester Ranger with the pointer.
