Thank you Greg. My father was only with me for 14 years before he died. He was a corporal in the Marines during WWII. He went through every one of those hideous beach landings in the pacific. My mother told me years later that he would wake up screaming in the middle of the night. He taught me to fish, shoot and hunt. I inherited his 1950 Sweet 16.

I think about him every day.

It's good to remember those who have fallen defending our freedoms. I just raised my flag from half mast at noon today and find myself thinking of the squadron mates we lost in Viet Nam. Really great guys that were gone too soon, but it is the price of freedom.

I have never figured out a response for those who thank me for my service on memorial day. I was one of the fortunate ones who made it through my missions over the North unscathed and start feeling guilty when I'm recognized by friends and neighbors on Memorial Day, but mostly I'm confused about how to respond. I simply thank them and let it slide rather than sound preachy and try to educate them. Afterwards I feel a little guilty at that copout.

riflemeister,

When people thank me on Memorial Day for my service, I simply say thank you and then advise them that I just did what needed to be done, and those that gave their lives for our country are the military people we proudly honor and remember on Memorial Day.

Every military man or lady who returned home safely carries a little guilt, it's what happens when we see our friends give their lives for our freedom, I try to remember them proudly and not feel guilty in any way, they would definitely not want it.

Riflemeister, my 91 year old mom feels the same way as you and doesn't mind expressing her opinion. It galls her when she hears a TV commercial telling audience to have a "fun" Memorial Day.

"All gave some;
some gave all."
Forever Young:
SSGT Thomas Henry Laird, "Air Apaches", 500th Bomb Sqdn, 345th Bomb Group, 5th Air Force, MIA/KIA October 16, 1943, Wewak, New Guinea
PFC Robert Hardeman, 2nd Marines, KIA July 2, 1944, Saipan.

Mom's oldest brother; mother-in-law's only brother.

Mom's brother Tom's plane after being forced by AA to ditch just off the coast of New Guinea, Oct 16, 1943. The crew was later seen in the raft before being picked up by a Japanese boat. He was reported alive, but it is believed executed by the Japanese as was the fate of allied airmen shot down and captured. Photo taken by another B-25 that was on the mission. They had just strafed and parafragmentation bombed a Japanese airbase on Wewak, NG. Gil
