I've only been playing with 16 gauge stuff for a couple of years. So I am relatively new. I started out shooting a factory 1 1/8 oz load that is very common. Federal was my preference, but I shot Remington and Winchester loads that were very close to the same thing. Its that 9/8 oz of 6s at 1295 fps. You can buy them at Walmart.

Anyway, as I started reloading soon after, I have been trying to mimic that load. I have loaded it successfully in a federal hull. It looks good on paper, but I can't seem to get consistent crimps, and I didnt get but only one or two loads.

I can't find something close in any hull but Cheddite, which are the easiest hull to get. I Finally started reducing the powder charge of a longshot load that BPI has listed at like 1440 fps, and it shows acceptable patterns, and I hope appropriate speed with 2.5 grains less. I don't have a chronograph. The real problem is the load calls for a Z16 wad, and with a 9/8 ounce load in that hull with that wad, it requires an overshot car to take up space. For whatever reason, this annoys me.

Friends, there has to be a reasonable 9/8 ounce 1260- 1300 fps load in a cheddite hull that stacks correctly and patterns well without an overshot card. Does anybody have something they love that fits that description?

How about this. I believe member Bowbuilder had this tested

Cheddite 16 ga. hull
Winchester 209 primer
24.0 grains Longshot
Cheddite 1628 wad
1-1/8 oz. Lead shot
1305 FPS - 10,600 PSI

The Cheddite wad is sometimes tough to get.

The other option is to use the wad you have and instead of putting a card on top, use a felt wad inside the shotcup. This will give you the proper wad column height and in setback the shot should be forced into the wad negating bore scrub. You can pattern the load to verify. The felt wad will not increase chamber pressure.

I routinely use a thin overshot card (28 gauge size) in my light 16 and 20 gauge loads. It's no trouble to drop it on top of the shot at the crimp starter station. Much easier than stuffing a felt wad in the shot cup.

The alternative is to fiddle with your crimp starter and crimping stations until you get something you like.

the Ched wad for 9/8 can be had at Graphs I use this load with 25grns Ls and #6 for Grouse and snow hares because the hares are big the woods are thick.

Cheddite Hull
WW 209
22 gr. Longshot
Z16 wad
1 1/8 shot of your choice
Tried 23 gr. but chrono read 1370 and 22 gr. patterns better

RGL Hull
WW209
21.8 gr. Longshot
SP16 Wad
1 1/8 oz of 5's
Fills the case up and crimps are the best I have ever done. Have not ran thru crony but
patterns beautifully. Has become my favorite.

Thank you, guys.

I was unable to local Cheddite 1628 wads you guys that are using the 1632 wad what is the pressure?

RGL is that the black Remingtons or the green or does it matter? I have a few black rems and all the components to try that load john. I could try. Do you figure its somewhere just under 1300FPS?

Velocity on that Remington hull load is 1240. It is a published load by Hodgdon. You could get it to 1300 FPS but the pressure would probably be over 11,500 PSI.

No offense intended here but, that seems like a pretty good solid load. What's the reason for 1300 FPS?

MSM2019 none taken.
personal preference.
It's what the factory load I've been shooting is. It patterns well through all three of my main hunting guns and most importantly I have confidence in it.

I'm a guy who prefers a little bit of pace in a load.
Not screaming but pace.
